I don't know what happened exactly in Itaewon, but as I was going down the stairs I heard a yell and then a noise from a Korean woman and went back up to look and saw a Korean woman on the sidewalk near where you cross from the Hamilton to where the Cold Stone Creamery, and around two guys, they were Korean at least from their features and a few Korean cops and American MPs were trying to stop the fight, but the MPs seemed to be exercising lots of caution and checked on the woman and tried to calm the situation and the Korean cops weren't using any force on the guys and just tried to keep them separated. There were a bunch of bystanders. I wonder if anyone knows anything. I am guessing that a bunch of MPs were with Korean cops and making the rounds when a guy did something to where the Korean girl was on the ground and some other guy into altercation with another guy.
I am sure it's hard to be composed as an American MP when probably you feel someone is in the wrong, but I guess they were trying to be supportive of the Korean cops who were with them. I do have a lot of respect generally for the MPs that I see. I've talked to a few.

If the MP's werent actively involved, it was a serviceman committing the crime (thank God) but as you said probably a MP on patrol with the Kops. If it was a serviceman the MP's would have been all over that situation and keeping the Kops back, I imagine. At least thats how all MP operations Ive ever seen happen worked (even overseas) |

Seems to me that the REAL Captain Jack Sparrow would have taken a closer interest and offered aid to the frightened woman. You're a fraud. |

MPs, CPs and AFSPs always accompany KNPs on patrols near military bases, usually to act as witnesses to make sure the other is following the statutes stipulated in the SOFA regarding treatment of US servicememebers and contractors- which measn that each other makes sure two things don't happen~ make sure the MPs aren't too lenient on the servicemember committing a crime and to make sure the KNPs don't abuse the servicemember. So, it is safe to say they act mostly as a counterbalance to each other.
However, when a soldier does something, the KNPs back off and let the MPs do their job. And when a Korean does something while they are on patrol, the MPs back off and let the Korean police do their job. |

There were like more than a dozen American MPs and a few Korean police officers. There seemed to be about a dozen foreigners there as well. I had to catch the last train home. Anyway, the foreigner with me said you don't interfere when Koreans are in altercations. I just asked if anyone saw anything. |

I have nothing to add to this thread other than the fact that I appreciate you putting the date in the subject line.
I am unaware of MP patrols outside of Daegu that go out without KNP support. The senior MP I met at one of the local bases doesn't go out in uniform on a regular basis, and never goes out armed. If you're a serviceman and you see him, you *will* stand at parade rest and answer every question you are asked, or there will be three KATUSA with guns who will "educate" you in the proper way to address a superior officer.
I love the military presence here. |

Well, did the prediction happen last night? April 13th at 10:10PM was just 10 hours ago, but the prediction was made on Sunday. |

That was funny how I got the date wrong. Well, sometimes every day seems the same in Korea. Well, it sometimes feels that way, though I enjoy my days here. Anyway, I thought it was nice seeing American MPs with Korean military and police trying to defuse a situation and assist a lady. There were a bunch of bystanders, but maybe they don't post on Dave's. Plenty of people don't. |

Thanks, Janny and Straphanger, it's nice to know that I was missed. I haven't really been posting that much on Dave's, except sporadically.
I am still in Namhan or South Korea.
Guess what? I have to immigration to sort out a mess. It's not the first time I've had issues with immigrantion, but I've got a sense of humor and understand people make errors, but I hope they wave the fine, though it's small, because it wasn't really my fault. I posted about this in the job forum. |
