I'm looking into getting British citizenship for my wife, she's Iraqi.

I emailed the home office and they sent an email back saying I should consult the British embassy in the country where I reside to pursue this.

I'm also waiting for a reply from the U.K. border agency about citizenship.

Anyway, I know the rules state somebody must be resident in the U.K. for 3 years before they become a citizen, but I'm living here right now, so what would you (Brits in particular) advise?

Thank you.

You would need to go back and live there with her on a spousal visa.

There are quite strict rules about the amount of time she must be in the country as well. From the year of her citizenship application she cannot leave the country for more than x days.

It takes a bit of reading up on it.

My old lady got her British citizenship in 1997 where she had to swear an oath of allegance to the queen - she kept her fingers crossed! Laughing

By then she had been living in the UK 29 years. One of the conditions was the 3 years unbroken residency, I don't know about the new rules such as language proficiency and the daft test about British culture 'what is LBW?'
I think it might be a bit tougher these days.

The Life in the UK test can be bypassed if you take a TESOL course and Citizenship course combined and can show you moved up a level.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

She is now a "subject" of her royal majesty the Queen of England.

Being a subject of the Queen means she is the Queen's property.

She's the Queen's property now! Laughing

If she had instead gone to the US and became a Yank she would be a free woman and would be nobody's subject. Wink

FREE - subject to the patriot act, where you can be imprisoned without cause or recourse to the courts for an indefinite period of time - what kind of freedom is that?

Long live the Guantanamo bay detention center.

OP: SORRY for the hijack.

I think you are drunk! Laughing

If the queen ordered my mum to do something - my mum would tell her to *beep* off and probably bollock her about her treatment towards Diana Spencer - she has gone nuts over the reports that Paul Burrell may have shagged Diana Spencer! Laughing

If my mum was a US citizen - she would be classed as 'Hispanic' and would only get jobs as a maid - spending all her days cleaning some fat septic bastards mansion - however in the UK - career advancement is available for 'hispanics' and she works as a Spanish teacher! Cool

NB: Whose bright idea was it to put the swear filter back into place? Evil or Very Mad
