for the past several weeks I cannot use RealPlayer with Firefox - for the life of me, I cannot uncover the reason why. It always crashes - it doesn't matter what website I'm streaming from - and in that regards - it's both U.S. and British websites - the RealPlayer always crashes.
I've checked and rechecked my preferences everywhere possible.
I am being forced to use IE which I absolutely LOATHE as I'm sure some of you will identify with. That is, if I use IE - RealPlayer works fine - no problem.
My OS is in Korean so I can't go there if that is where the problem is.
Everywhere I have looked so far tho, Firefox has been designated my default browser; I've checked and rechecked RealPlayer, same thing.
I'm at an absolute loss as to why this is occurring.
Any suggestions? |

Yeah, I have one. Get something better than Windows 98... Maybe, Ubuntu Linux or XP? |

Agreed. You won't be able to fix anything with a Korean OS if you don't know Korean. That is your real problem.
Install Mandriva or openSUSE. If you're really scared about using something other than windows you might want to try ubuntu because there's a little more hand holding. The other two are still very easy and a bit more enjoyable in my opinion.
If you have a copy available just install english XP. That would also do the trick. |

xp is not an option as the nb can't handle it - fyi, I would have done that quite a while ago (and the hardware is not upgradeable)
anyway, win98 is not a bad os, it works fine -
so far, neither of these 2 responses have provided an explanation as to why it would even be the OS - so unless I have more to go on, that's a pretty extreme measure IMO - |

real player is a horrid program.

I love how you can download it, tell it not to load on startup, disable all the stuff it wants to install during installation, go into MSCONFIG and disable it that way--and it still finds a way to show up when you turn on your computer. It's like the annoyance that won't stop being annoying. |

Superdave is on the money today. I completely agree again.
If your computer isn't powerful enough to handle XP you certainly don't want RealPlayer's offical bloatware on it. I have a 6 year boycott running on realmedia, but if you absolutely must use it, then definitely use the thing superdave suggested.
The reason I suggested installing linux is that older computers generally run much better with it. I would at least burn a live CD and give it a test run. Keep in mind that it will perform better once it's actually installed. You may want to start with Ubuntu if you've never tried linux, but there are significantly better flavors out there in my opinion.
If your computer is really ancient you'll probably want a "light" distro. I haven't tried any though, so I can't make any personal recommendations. |

I would not even think of changing over to another player - I like RealPlayer, have used it for years and continue to use it on my mac. I find it's the best player by and large - even the Divx player skips around - RealPlayer doesnt.
it's true RealPlayer cornered the market some years ago and screwed up a bit, but so f*cking what - a lot of other players come and go, promise the moon and the stars but don't deliver.
it's not worth my time to change os since I mostly just use the old win machine for downloading and occasionally hook it up to streaming radio to play music when I'm busy w/the mac - that's when I'd prefer using mozilla instead of ie
anyway thanks for the responses. this old windows machine has done me well - almost time to put it out of its misery - maybe sooner rather than later. |

Yeah...it would take time from maintaining your OS museum.

Few suggestions.....
Well if your using Firefox 3 with Win98 thatll be a problem. Otherwise youll need an older version of FF
http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?locale=en-US&forumId=1&comments_parentId=74873
if you are using an older version of FF, get tht IE Tab plugin, lets u run an IE tab through FF and is a SUPER handy plugin to get.
As for Real Player, you may like it but its a piece.....there are many lighter alternatives, and if your on 98, you probably want something lighter that runs better anyway.
With your comp being so old, hope you keep it maintained too, Reg cleans, spyware scans defrags etc.....
if i were you id try to separate the problem.
Get the link you want from the site your browsing. Then close FF, load up Real Player, add the link to it manually, then try run it. See if RP crashes when you dont have FF running. Could be a problem with RP, could be a conflict with FF |
