One of the biggest problems of native teachers at public schools is how to keep the kids quiet.
Most teachers know that the students respond well to Korean teachers but not at all to foreign teachers.
Out of frustration and despartation I did a bit of experimenting and discovered a way to keep them quiet.
I find out who the monitor of the class is. Then I get this little inflatable plastic baton that came in an activity set. When the students are too loud, I hold the baton in the air. The monitor sees it and yells at the top of his or her voice, "Shut up!" in Korean. It's something like Joyongee!!! Anyway, when the student hear it, they usually shut the hell up. If they don't, then they have to go kneel with their hands in the air.
The great thing is that they hate hearing this being yelled. You can imagine why, too. (Would you like to hear your classmate yelling "shut up" over and over?)
After about 4 or 5 times (in the first 10 minutes of class!!!), they get tired of hearing the yelling and just be quiet. The classes are much calmer and go smoother than in the past.
Best of all, I'm not tired!

I have a Storm Whistle.

I get it out and put it up to my mouth.

They are normally quiet before I blow it.

If they don't shut up I put my fingers in my ears take a deep breath and blow hard.

Shuts them up quick smart.

OOOOOOHHHH

what a great idea! I was thinking of getting a megaphone, sticking it to offenders' ear and shouting "be quiet please"!

this could be a cheaper alternative!

I use 'the look' and employ dead silence on my part until there's dead silence on their part. Cool

I try that too... then employ a scowl in the direction of the offenders..

usually works.. except when you have a big rowdy classroom to begin with.

too many offenders Smile

I ordered mine directly from the company.

Used Paypal to pay.

Arrived 8 days later. I actually ordered two but my CT fell in love with it and got it.

Send them a copy of your address in Korean and English and they will stick that on the parcel as well.

Pretty good customer service.

I used to be a professional sailor, and I'm amazed I had not heard of these before.

I blow up a ballon. I pop it when necessary-I use it sparingly as too much of a good thing.
