So, the next iteration of the iphone will be out in a month, and it's 3g. They'll be selling it in Japan, will it make it to Korea?
My crystal ball says maybe. Koreans seem to love features over substance, which is why the ipod took a while to get off the ground. But after using an Iphone for 3 months, I don't see how anyone can go back to anything less than one.
If it doesn't get in, it'll be pure protectionism. I think the iphone would make a dent for itself in the korean market. |

Aren't features and substance the same thing?
I would otherwise assume you mangled the idiom "style over substance," but then the rest of that doesn't make sense since many nerds would argue that the ipod is about style more than substance. |

What can the iPhone do that none of the current Korea or Japanese phones cannot do?
Do you have any idea what these phones have?
More sophisticated cameras, TV on the go, internet, news groups, MMS, videos, voice recorders etc.
The iPhone hardly made a dent in the UK so I don't expect it to do any better in the land of mobile gadgets. Flash and no substance is more like it. |

Well it's absurd how hard it is for me to transfer MP3's to my Korean phone. I have to download software (windows only), create a user (using my ARC number) then download ANOTHER piece of software in order to use a WEB based interface that uses Active-X, something only internet explorer has. And I just bought my phone. All it takes is 1 touch to transfer the same stuff on most any non-insane phone, iphone, or ipod.
I agree there's no way Korea would swallow the iPhone and more importantly, no reason Apple should enter this market. The cell phones here are no better than the U.S. and the only thing they offer are a few TV channels. Korean may have cheap cell phones, but like a lot of their gadgets it's just a knock off of another brand that innovated first, such as the Anycall Haptic modeling itself after the iPhone.
This isn't to say I don't like my little LG phone, I just don't see why Apple would take a risk on entering a very closed market in a country that's not known respect of copyright. And if the beef import madness is any indication, I'm sure the Korean Telecom's could start some rumors about iPhones causing Scanner-esque head explosions and have 80,000 idiots outside Apple reseller protesting by beating anyone wearing white earbuds.

| Apple is in negotiations with a Korean carrier. I don't remember which one. At first none of the companies wanted to deal with it since it could directly connect to the internet, and do it much cheaper than any korean phone. |

well i've been reading that apple has been negotiating with KTF. apparently KTF is a partner of docomo in japan and they had planned to release it in korea using their partnership.
the iphone in japan is being released under the softbank carrier, so i guess it will be more difficult for korea to get it now. i read that steve jobs thinks the korean market is too small. i also read that there are some KTF people currently at the WWDC in san fran, so that may be a promising sign.
my question is, since the iphone is now 3g, cant i just buy one from japan, jailbreak/unlock it and use it in korea?? |

It's called feature creep. Korean and Japanese headsets can have features till the cows come home, but how much of it is used, and for that matter, how much of it is seamless?
Sorry, but I've been using an iphone for the past 3 months, and there are very few cellphones out there where you want to and actually *do* use every single feature offered effortlessly. |

Apple is starting something called the app store for 3rd party developers. if Naver and melon etc start their own apps and people want them... |

Here's the Rub. SKT, LG, KTF will want their proprietary crap on the phone the minute it comes out of the box.
You think they want you to be able to just transfer MP3's to your phone? You think they want you to make it easy to create your own ringer? Hell no. Then will break the iPhone. Look at the Motorola phones (RAZR2, KRZR). In the US models, you just plug the phone in via USB. IT charges, serves as a data cable. Also, putting songs on the phone is simple drag and drop.
The Korean versions are butchered with their own "custom" software.
First off, there is no Korean keyboard for the iPhone/iPod Touch. I guess Apple didn't think Koreans are important enough to be able to type in their own language.
Secondly, you have Samsung's iPhone clone. It is NOT the Haptic. It is called the OMNIA.

Lastly, the market is going to prevent the iPhone from coming here. Look how much the Haptic is. It was well over 800,000w. The iPhone would be around 500,000w. It would be a LOT cheaper than the other smartphones here. No way LG and Samsung is going to let Apple undercut their unfair prices.
If the iPhone came to Korea, it would be broken. Half the features would be locked out, Safari wouldn't work on 99% of the Korean websites, and you can't even Wifi in Starbucks without a Nespot account.
If I'm Steve Jobs, and I see all these barriers to Entry for the iPhone in Korea, I would just say screw it. Let the other phone makers put out knockoffs. |

This is my concern. I really, honestly think that the Iphone would kill in Korea. It might take a bit for it to catch on, but I do think it'd kill. |

There are laws that prohibit foreign cell phones here because of the Mobile internet standards in Korea.. Basically they force control on you that no foreign company doesn't give a rats ass about.
I would give my right testicle for a blackberry, but it will never happen. I just PRAY to god that Canada slaps all Korean brand phones with 100% duty because they are dumping onto the canadian market while prohibiting Canadian firms such as rim to export stuff here. |

You can get a blackberry here, well they supposedly changed it so it's viewed as a PDA, but LMB just did it to appease Basille who was in the country for some reason. The thing is, it can only be sold to businesses, not individuals.. some people go to Hong Kong and get them and use them here.. |
