This morning I went to the coffee bean around 9 am in Hongdae. There were no customers there. I ordered a my iced-blended coffee drink and payed for it. The girl then gives me one of those 진 동 buzzer things where they punch in the number and it lights up when your order is ready. I look at her giving this to me and just wonder why? there's nobody else in this place. She makes me the frozen treat and all the while I'm waiting right there. I sit down on the bench in front of the pick up counter. there's no one else in the place. She looks at me and I look at her. The drink is finished and she then punches in the number and the buzzer goes off. Why oh Why ? It felt like something from a comedy movie. I was not more then two feet behind the counter the entire time. I know it's not true of many Korean woman but sometimes it just seems that many of them are programed not to think, especially the ditzy pretty ones.

Yea I know what you mean, but they usually give the buzzer (you were at the Coffee Bean, weren't you?).

I like to wander around the store a bit or sometimes I use the washroom, so I don't mind having the buzzer anyways.

Sounds like it was more of a corporate policy that every customer gets a buzzer than anything else. Most low wage jobs like that pay their staff NOT to think.

Sounds similar to my going into a Burger King and ordering a BDCB set. Cashier calls my order into into the mic, rings it up, takes my money, then GOES BACK TO THE GRILL to fill my order. If no one else is there working, why call it into the mic?

A lot of times it's just habit. You do something 500 million times a day, like call an order into the microphone...it just kind of happens. Sort of like how I'm so used to sales clerks saying, "Have a nice day!" that when they say something like, "Enjoy your movie!" instead I just instinctively say, "You too!" and immediately feel like a tard.

Or it could be management policy to prevent employees from using (and possibly mis-using) their own discretion. If you don't force every single employee to do everything by the book all of the time, then you get a) people making their own judgment calls about when by-the-book is necessary, and b) people potentially falling out of the habit of just automatically doing things by the book. It's stupid a lot of the time, but lots of places would rather make their employees look like morons than risk having their customers actually deal with a moronic employee who has been allowed to use his own judgment.

Just last week, I stopped by my neighbourhood's Mcdonald's for a few hamburgers before heading off to work. When I walked in the girl at the front counter was chit chatting was her friends while I was standing there for a solid minute there were 2 custumers who did not have the decency to step aside for the next custumers while waiting for their orders, fine . A couple walked, barged through and got their order, fine! After serving the later custumer she went back and continued on with then chit chat. I remained very patient, that she maybe she wasn't awared of my presence, abit later I gently called out Jogiyo and louder the second time she turned around with this dum surprised look on her face. "3 hamburgers please" I said, she looks confused so I spoke in korean "hambogo sae gae juseyo" She then pointed out the burgers combo menu on the neon board Question One of her friend then came, picked up the pamphlet menu next to the counter and slightly slammed it in front of my face with a giggled; I just wanted to strip her naked and spank that yellow ass. I had to repeated the word hamburger 4 times and she still didnt get it so I had to gesture my way through until she finally figured it out; her and friends immediately started giggling and talked shit in Korean and along joined a few customers, trust me it's not funny at all.

She said it'll take 5 minutes, fine whatever. 5 minutes past, then 10 still havent receive my order, customers came and some got what they wanted and left....hmm wtf is going on here. I then asked a dude who walked back and forth between the kitchen and the front counters if my order was ready he then asked the kitchen dude at the back he seem not to received such order. The girl who was serving me earlier immediately walked to the back of the kitchen at the same time her friends also disappeared, there was then a commotion at the back of the kitchen when he returned he didn't even dare to look at me in the face when said I'll have wait for another 5 minutes , my face was pale red. I asked for my money to be return and threw it all in the Ronald Mcdonald's charity box and stormed out of there, while I was walking I was wondering whether she simply forget or did it intentionally.

Still the start of my day didn't end there, while I was sitting in the subway car an adjumma sitting opposite to decided to deep swirl her nose with her index finger then flicked it in the air, the fucker almost hit me; boy was I tempted to returned her the favour from one of my own Razz a bogey fight..haha!

She did it because those 진동 buzzer thingies are FUN! Very Happy

Everyone knows that!

They're also a handy way of reminding low-tech backwoodsy yangnoms that:

Why would you give your business to a place like that? If they're ignoring you, leave, if they won't take your order or listen to you, leave.

Why do you bother being polite? Just go up to the counter and shout,

"Ya, hamburger!" and tap your watch and speak in English if you don't speak Korean. Works like a fucking charm. Why bother being polite to the hard of thinking?

Of course you might not want to go back Very Happy .

I do that a lot. It's worse when you travel and you get your languages discombobulated. Walking around Japan and telling everyone "감사합니다" makes me feel like an idiot. I can speak Japanese, but the habit of Korean is hard to shake for the first day or so.

Because the girl is a waitress, not a mind reader.
It might seem odd to you, you just want your coffee and you can see that no one else is there. However, we don't know how many people will or won't walk in to the coffee shop while she is making your drink. If there were a sudden rush after you placed your order, how pissed would you be if your drink got lost in the chaos?
For the customer it's all about me and my order, for the waitress it's all about you, other customers and other orders. As another poster pointed out, it is probably company policy to hand out a buzzer at a certain point in every transaction. When you get into the habit of completing a transaction by handing out a buzzer you just do it automatically. The waitress may well have been a ditz, but completing an order by following policy (and habit) is not really a good example of being a ditzy princess.
I agree that service skills and multi-tasking are rare in Korean cafes, bars and restaurants (kimbap joints aside - for multi-tasking, at least), and there is a lot of inefficient drink-fixing going on in Korean bars, but what did it cost you to pick up the stupid buzzer?
