Hello,
I secured a job in Seoul starting in September. I was wondering how comprehensive is the medical exam I will receive once I arrive in Korea. What exactly do they check. Is it a simple physical, or do they do blood work also? I was thinking of getting checked by my doctor anyway, but if the Koreans do thorough check, then I'll save my money and wait until I get there. |

It will quite literally depend upon where you end up having the check done ... And they may or may not tell you the specific results of the tests they do ... Other than for the drug test and the HIV test (which must be specifically reported on) ... Mine did do some blood tests ... but I did not get the specific results for what they did .... And if you are paying for the test asking them to include specific things could add to the cost ... And unless your school is paying for it .. You will be paying for it outside of the National Health System ... Unless you are enrolled ... Which could be more expensive.
I think in your situation if you want a medical checkup ... I would get one before I left ... Especially if you want to know results for particular things .. You may not get a doctor with fluent English when you have the tests done ... And if you want to know what to do ... If it does bering anything up ... Then you probably want more than the Medical Check is meant to pick up on ... What the health check is really saying is that you are fit to work in your job ... and don't have a communicable disease or do drugs ... Nothing more ... To get more than this you will need to pay more ... I would do it before I left if I wanted to be sure there was nothing to worry about ... |

| From memory, mine included a blood and urine test, vision test, hearing test, colourblindness test, dental check, height and weight measurement, blood pressure test and chest X-ray. |

Same tests were done for mine for a renewal, and no it is not covered by the NHIC. |

why colourblindness? whats that got to do with teaching/general health?
if you fail the colourblindness test then do you fail the health check (I can't really tell the difference between orange and brown) |

The things included in the test that many of us have done are just part of the normal employment physical that most Korean employees do ... We basically get the standard physical which must include a couple of specific things ... While they will report on anything they find/do ... The main things that will see you "fail" for our purposes are the drugs/communicable diseases things ... So not colourblindess ... (But that would affect some other jobs) ...
There were a lot of different groups of people who were doing similar sorts of tests as us when I did my tests ..
But the things that immigration is most concerned about are the drugs (other than cannibas since the changes) and the communicable diseases. |
