So I've seen some debate recently about wether you can get an E1 with a non-English related Master's degree.
I am teaching English but will have a Master's in History soon. Is it possible to still get an E-1?
You used to be able to do so but I imagine the new laws changed this. Since everyone wants an E-1 to get out of the hoops.
Anyone get an E-1 on their non-English Masters?
Anyone get denied? |

It depends on what your JOB is.
E2 - teacher of foreign languages.
E1 - visiting professor.
If you have a non related degree and you are teaching English then you will get an E2.
If you have a RELATED MA or PhD and are teaching in your field you MAY (probably will) get an E1.

Nope, I have a BA in History and I have an E-1. Other History Grads I work with have both E-1's and E-2's. One guy with a B.Ed., BA History and MA History has an E-2. |

Many unis tried to get E-1 visas for the teachers with Masters. Immi said no if they are teaching English courses, it doesn't matter what the degree was in.
Other people claim different things, my story comes from a group of uni teachers who tried themselves. |

My E-1 mixup was from 2004. They are probably guarding the E-1's a lot more closely these days. It never used to make a scrap of difference whether one had an E-2 or E-1. Now, it's huge. |

My masters degree is not related to the teaching of English, and I was able to get an E1 since I had 2 years of documented teaching experience. I am not sure whether they care at what level this is.
Besides getting out of taking the physical and not being required to turn in a criminal background check, what does the E1 get you? Actually, my employer still required a CBC, and I could easily pass a physical.
On the downside, I was not considered for some overtime opportunities since an E1 restricts the jobs that one can take. |
