I am no longer in Korea, I moved earlier this year to Taiwan. But I have been watching the protests about US beef unfold and to tell you the truth the amount of hypocracy and stupidity the Korean public is showing is HILARIOUS.
So US Beef is unsafe? Why aren't Americans and people from the 70 countries they export beef to dropping like flies? The way the Korean public is behaving you would think that US Beef was contaminated with the plague or something. (and I am not American, so I am not writing this in defense of my nation)
Korean should be more concerned with-
* The high percentage of people (particularly males) who smoke.
* Alcohol abuse (it's not ok to eat US Beef but downing 3 bottles of soju every night is perfectly ok?)
* Road safety, especially the amount of small children you riding on scooters with their parents but not wearing helmets. Also drink driving by drunk ajosshis should be more of an issue.
All the above issues cause people to die, we are still waiting to see the first case of a person to die from eating US beef.
And why are Koreans so scared of US beef? Everyday I was told Kimchi was the world's "wonder food", its health benefits could cure ailments from SARS to cancer. My question is why don't Koreans make sure they just eat their US T-bone steak with a side of Kimchi, this way they will stay perfectly healthy! |

Its because Korean DNA is more susceptible to Mad Cow disease, hence it is more dangerous to Koreans than anyone else in the world.
Seriously, thats what the common belief is. I'm not making this up. |

yes, IU have heard that, but not directly from a person's mouth.
If I do, I have the perfect counter-argument.
'So you're saying that Koreans are weak and inferior?'

I met a Korean guy, same exact age as me, last night. He lived in the Bronx for a while. He told me that he, as well as a lot of other Koreans, aren't happy with the Korean mentality that is portrayed here. Not all Koreans think U.S. beef will kill you. The media is blowing this out of proportion. He also says he doesn't like the way Koreans think. I told him to think about what he encountered while living in the States. He said there is no solution. No solution. |

I say again that it is too damn ironic that this all became an issue right after there were reports of avian flu and proposed inspections of restaurants that serve illegal dog meat in Seoul . How do we divert that attention? Hmmm.... |

I asked my students if any Korean has died from Mad cow. No. Then how is it even knowable that Korean DNA is more susceptible? "We can't explain in English" I think was the response, or confused silence. |

The point is that many Koreans are NOT thinking on this beef issue, period. |

Totally agree. And...
"In humans, eating meat products contaminated with the illness is linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and fatal malady blamed for the deaths of over 150 people worldwide, mostly in Britain." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080607/ap_on_re_as/skorea_us_beef_55
Only 150 people. And they are protesting?
And...
The fact that 90% of restaurants don't have soap in this contry does not seem to concern anyone. More people do/will get sick from the spread of disease this way than anything a cow can do.
And...
It's ironic that more people will be hurt in the protests of US beef than the beef itself.
And...
Hi, Korean beef is not that good anyways. |

I even discussed with a Korean who lived in the US for 11 years, and he was trying to defend his people. His excuse was that Koreans eat the intestines and what have you. Anyway, I said to him the report that said Koreans are more susceptible is not scientific, because you would need to compare Koreans who got afflicted with the illness and compare them to Caucasians who were afflicited with it. Korea is too affected by Left wing media people who do not mind lying to the teeth and Koreans will believe them. KBS engages in lots of fraudulent reporting and so do the other media outlets. It is not the fault of the Korean people that people who engage in fraudulent reporting for Leftist and nationalist propaganda are in the media. For example, when the two girls were killed by accident in 2002 by some American soldiers, the media reported falsely that KATUSA soldiers and American soldiers got into a fight as a result of it.
This was not true. It was very false. However, the media likes to play on nationalist feeling and some of the media are the enemy of the Koreans. Koreans with some conservativeness who want a future should fight back against these people. I say this as a person who is somewhat to the Left in my own country. I don't respect the Korean Left. |

I seem to remember a prof back in school said that the difference in human DNA was almost nil and only related to a few certain genetic traits. He went on to say, (mind you this was 20 years ago so my memory might not be correct) that 97% of our DNA is the same as amphibians.
Look at it this way. At the time Koreans/Asians and Europeans went their seperate ways there were no domesticated livestock. We were both snacking on any damn thing we could catch to stay alive. That included bovines.
Here's another tact. Red pepper comes from Central and South America. So that too must be harmful to Koreans. Don't eat potatoes either and stop smoking. Errrr....cars are dangerous also...

Genetics has changed quite a bit in the past year alone...
There are many diseases to which certain races are more genetically prone, off the top of my head, Tay Sachs, Sickle Cell Anemia, and Cystic Fibrosis just to name a few. DNA amongst the races might be as similar as you cite, but regulation and expression is not. It is not at all impossible that Koreans are genetically disposed to acquiring hvBSE. That being said, I have yet to see any article in a reputable scientific journal that would lead me to believe this to be true. |

Point well taken Sir.
The memory is quite a feeble thing and I don't trust mine.
Thus the disclaimer. |

This is what Korean protestors really need:
15,000 riot police armed to the teeth with tear gas grenades and stun guns to make these stupid, ignorant simpletons get a life. "Oh my god....U.S. beef is gonna kill us all!!!!! " Don't these people have ehhh...jobs, classes, hobbies. They are the result of Korean media brainwashed ultranationalism that causes the inevitable Korean mob mentality. They all get SOOOOOO upset, and 3 months later, they forget it ever happened. ....."American beef riots,.......what are you talking about???." It's the same thing for every stupid issue that comes up here. It gets blown out of proportion by the news media who control the Korean sheeple and Koreans start protesting for some other stupid reason. And before anyone goes accusing me of being a racist, my wife is Korean and she thinks the exact same thing that I do and is ashamed of the way Koreans are acting. Koreans: Action and yelling before logical thought is their mentality. 100% |
