I need some movies and TV shows for my upper level university students....any ideas?
So far I'm thinkin of using a Jim Carrey flick, perhaps The Mask. I figure it would be pretty easy for students to follow and understand. I really want to show an episode of Dexter.....but I don't think that woud go over too well with da boss. |

Who the hell would want to sit through The Mask?
At least show something challenging or something that provokes thought across cultures. It can be funny, and it can even be Jim Carrey, but The Mask??
It depends on the assignment. What do they need to get or do after it? |

The mask seems to be one of those rare movies that a lot of my students know and like, that and Notting Hill....No acounting for tasts and I can't change their taste....I tried real hard to introduce Jurassic 5, Bob Marley, and the God Father of Soul....most said "strangee" and 2 kids actually said "cool".
I don't expect much social commentary, I just want the have some conversation about things that are funny, interesting, favourite parts of the movie,....I just want to hit a majority of the kids in the class with something they could actually understand....
throw down some ideas!!!! Perhaps I can be egged on to do something cool..... |

The Mask and Notting Hill. Really?
Either this is an excellent trolling attempt, your students are idiots or I just lost some respect for Korean uni students as a whole.
My recommendations (under the implied limitations from admins):
Slap stick better than The Mask: Naked Gun movies, Will Ferrel sport movies
Romantic Comedies better than Notting Hill: Meet the Parents (that's rated PG13, right?)
Movies that make them think outside of "Koreanism": Dead Poet's Society, Office Space (but rated R) |

Hi,
our non credit courses teaching intermediate level students used 'How I met your mother' series 1 and 2 but we ended up buying the DVD as the subtitles were more helpful for expressions etc.
Also I have shown 'Music and Lyrics' which was a romantic comedy and was well received as was 'Knight's Tale' (adventure) some time ago.

All of the movie Baraka is on youtube. It provokes thought and shows them something outside their culture. Also a good message about not being a human consumer robot. Watch-movies.net has lots of movies for free and some are good quality. |

Movies with Koreans, or references to Korea, will go over well.
1. Disturbia
2. Training Day -Denzel Washingtown actually speaks Korean in the film
3. Crash
4. Lady in the Water
5. Knocked up
6. Harold and Kumar go to White Castle
7. Malibu's Most Wanted (girlfriend loved it)
But with the exception of number four, they are all pretty graphic, sexual
I would also play movies about university life
1. Higher Education
2. Good Will Hunting
3. Road Trip (My girlfriend really loved it)
4. Eurp Trip
Again, all with drug, sex references and violent.
Personally, I would prefer to teach an abridged book and a movie and then have them write compare/contract essays: White Fang, Of Mice and Men, Apollo 13, The Birds, The Last of The Mohicans, Jaws, Tow Sawyer, Huck Finn, etc.... |
