I did that trip a while back, maybe four years ago, so the info I have is a bit old. What I remember is that the rooms were pretty nice, I had a shared room with one other foreigner and the room had a toilet and shower/bathtub. At that time it was 120,000 won for one-way and it took about 17 hours.

The company was the Weidong Ferry company, but their website seems to be down, but there is another site http://www.seoulsearching.com/transportation/boat/ which has some info.

I took the boat both ways...to Dalian and from Qingdao. The Qingdao route had nicer boats, but both were fun. Food was lacking a bit, but there was plenty of good Tsingtao beer available, so it made up for the food. It was a good way to travel and if you're with friends, it would probably be even better.

I took the ferry to Qingdao last year - it got cancelled due to bad weather so I had to wait a few days, but it was comfy. I got my own bunk in a large communal area (second class). I think I went out to Incheon to book the ticket, but I'm sure a local travel agent will do it for you. seat61.com may have more info.

i took it three years ago....my friends and i thought it was a boat to beijing and thought that the whole trip--because that is what our korean helper who booked it for us told us. it was fairly cheap, maybe around 100$.

needless to say, we were slightly surprised to find ourselves in qingdao!!!

as for the boat, it was very nice. i don't know what class we were in but we had a "private" room with 8 bunks in it and since there were six of us travelling together, we had the whole room.

i do remember seeing the other class of travel, there were like 30 people on the floor laying a mere 12 inches or so apart from each other...yikes! that is so not for me. surrounded by a bunch of strangers that close to me?? i would highly recommended doing the bunk room.

it was quick, there was hot water for our bowl noodles...all in all it was a fantastic choice...

...and the flight to get to beijing was pretty cheap even though it was last minute, lol...
