I'm not sure if many of you were aware of this, but the Korean National Tourism Office has set up a hot line. you call (02)1330 and when an operator answers you just say "English". A moment later an English assistant comes on and you can ask them tourist information or use them as an interpreter. Simply tell them what you want to communicate and then hand your handphone to the store merchant and they will interpret into Korean and get a response.
I've used them many times for transportation info., etc. Sometimes you ask a question (How do I get to...), give them your cell phone number and then they might call you back in 5 min.
The hotline is open from 9-8, 7 days a week. Give it a try!
Cheers!

Each Telephone prefix in Korea has a KNTO hotline 1330, but do note that only Seoul has English operators - so far. They are very helpful.
Cheers! |

Good advice. I've used 1330 here in my small town for a variety of things and non-tourist needs. They are very helpful and will call you right back if they need to do some research for you.

Maybe you got the number from this post, as it was originally posted 5 years ago
It seems this is just a nice useful bumping of a post that some people could find useful. I know I will! I have always known the service existed, but I was not sure of the number. |

Really great, beyond usefull....I'm interested in the art of Paik Nam Jun, an experimental multimedia artist dating from the 70s-80s. The operator hung up, went and did some research and then rang back an hour later, gave me a list of places where his work may be found, with directions. Amazing, considering most people have not ever heard of the geezer. |

I think his work is terrible. It's so pretentious it represents everything I hate about conseptual art. It doesn't even look good. It's painfully busy and irritating. It has no message and communicates nothing unless you live in the Ivory tower of Post-Modernist jargon. |

I love how being educated is now an insult. |

I'm also no Norman Rockwell fan who thinks that everything has to be lowered to please the masses. Somewhere in the middle is the real art. |
