|
|
The English department at my middle school has a $300 surplus in its budget, so I suggested using some of the money to buy board games for the students.
So far I have Monopoly, Taboo and Scrabble. What others would you recommend? |

I really like Cluedo....get it free/printable in our Resources SHARE area.
Pictionary and Taboo and Trivial Pursuit Kids/jr versions work too. You can help out our teacher driven community by ordering through our Amazon affiliated bookstore. See all my recommendations , handpicked for teachers there. Click games in the directory on the left.

I would love to order through your affiliate since I've used a ton of material from your website, but Amazon won't ship a lot of the games outside of America. If you know a way around this let me know and I'll make an order. |

xcustomx,
No problem! I realize the limitations but it also is a cool place for new English teachers (or old!) to browse and see the best books/materials on offer for any category. I'll be posting up a "Best of ..." shortly. One item for each EFL category. Luckily, I got a couple librarians (real librarians!) who will soon begin adding some other categories.
This thread reminds me of one of the funniest things that ever happened while I was teaching English. I was teaching an afterschool class of teenagers. One guy was super smart and really just bored stiff. So I'd try and throw him a bone now and then. One lesson, I said that if we got the book work done, we could play games. All the class loved it, except him. As they were playing, he had the same glazed look. I asked, "What's up? Don't you like this?"....he just looked up sadly and said "Teacher, bored games..."

then my kids are easily amused i used it with my 1st and 2nd graders and they were fine with it for 25 min or so. (i allowed them to make an addition to the rules... the kids out already could choose WHICH red/blue/etc. circle the other kids in must use... so obviously they chose the farthest out and enjoyed watching them struggle)
how'd the board look? kids might respond better to something with a more store-bought appearance (no offense).
just thought of another... what about the game of life? i haven't tried that, but from what i remember of the game, it could be suitable for intermediate/advanced learners |

I made it by using that huge paper they use in art class and taping all of it together. It took a while to put together and color all the cirlces. If I had given them some soju and had them play it might have been a little more fun |

I will play Monolopy with my advance students, becuase it is great to help them numbers and reading. WIth commumity chest and chance cards they all want to read the cards.
With higher level students I play the Korean version, so they can translate
the Korean to English. |

You can also play most, if not all of these games online. Or your students can after class, at home on the computer. There are a pile of these on the Game page of EFL Classroom 2.0. Just click Play and then Games. Here's one....

Has anyone tried Cluedo in a normal class setting?, i.e not a camp or extra class.
I'd like to try but am just wondering how feasible it would be with seven games on the go at once.
I think my middle school grade three would be okay, but probably not grade one - what are other opinions?
Thanks for the links to the games, too. |

My kids love UNO and cards - fish, 99, one. I know these aren't board games but my students choose the card games before the board games - they are low level though. |
