Hey guys.

I am debating if I should bring my desktop tower with me when I go back to korea.

Anyone try to do this?

Any issues I should be worried about?
Is it possible?
Carry-on/Luggage?
Anything else?

Thanks.

Too heavy for carry on. Pack it (well padded with clothes) in your checked luggage. It will travel just fine. I do it all the time.

You will need to make sure it is a dual voltage power supply (I assume you are coming from the states) and can be switched to 220VAC input.

Other than that, no worries.

Unless it is a state of the art, quad core with all the bells and whistles, it is just easier to get one here (new machines start at ~200k and a quad core machine runs about 593k).

Think I should bother?

I was gonna just bring my power cord cause I'm bringing my xbox over too.
That should work with one of those 40$ converters right?

Just remember, YOU have to pack the weight all over hell's 1/2 acre.

Yes, it should work with a step down transformer.

An average desktop is 25lbs without any accessories (mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc).

Getting a new one is cheap (see pics above).

Until you get paid and can afford a new PC, PC-bangs are on every street and cost about $1 per hour.

I wouldn't bother bringing one here but that is just me.

Ya maybe I'll wait...

I did the whole PC bang thing last time until I bought a cheap computer for about 300.

I just didn't like the wait period between pcbangs and money in my pocket. Life in a PC bang gets pretty dry fast.

Other than that. Where's the best place to shop. I'll be living in sadang, near gangnam...

I have seen some alright prices at youngsan, although I hear that they chop a lot of parts up and give you used/predamaged stuff. Esp with tvs etc.

I saw some nice wide screen LCD's, probably 44 inch, going for about 900,000 there that I'd love to have hooked up to a beast of a machine.

I like to do my shopping at son-in plaza. The prices are about 10-30% lower than the same items over at Yongsan station.

If you shop at the reputable dealers the items are "off the shelf" and "new in the box" with factory seals.

They also assemble the computer "while you wait" - "while you watch" (if you are inclined).

The prices above were last weekend at J-tech computers at the son-in plaza.
there are other dealers (new and used) with comparable prices on similar offerings and used machines (LCD monitor included) from as little as 150k.

Ya I have only ever gone to the gwan-gwan and Najin. Didn't even know about Son-in plaza.

I'll check it out when I get back to korea... which, assuming all goes well, will be in 10 days-ish.

I still got my old LCD and shitty hd stashed at my buddys house. I curbed the tower.

I'd love to get a nice gaming system if I could. I'll have to check out what they have. I'm a little behind in what's up to date these days.

I brought my tower in my carry-on luggage. I took the parts out and left the case at home. Put it back together here, and it's working great.

My computer is fairly old, but it's still good and I really didn't want to spend the money on a new one. It's only about $500 for an equal computer here, but it would have been $500 down the drain.

I upgraded a little with cheap used parts at Sun-in and they are working like new. Smile
