I'm not very technologically savvy nor extensively knowledgeable about cameras for that matter... BUT I do own a Nikon D80. I think it's a pretty good camera for an introductory or intermediate photo enthusiast. Overall, I'm really satisfied with the quality. I can definitely see the difference between my Canon (point & shoot) and Nikon D80. The colour is much more crisp and clearer! (okay, so this is not a fair comparison... but I don't have another DSLR to compare with.)

In my opinion, I think Canon takes nicer portraiture (skin tones) and Nikon does a better job with others, like landscapes. This is just personal thought really... but I think Canon makes a good point and shoot digital cameras, whereas Nikon makes great SLR/DSLR.
