Around 4 million Australian adults, or 26 percent of the population, were obese, eclipsing the 25 percent rate in the United States, a study by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute released in Melbourne said.

This is no surprise. Most Australians live in large cities, which are designed for drivers, not pedestrians. You drive everywhere to do everything - and distances are such that if you live in the suburbs, you drive to a big mall in the next suburb to do your shopping. It is not easy just to walk to the post office on your way to work. Pedestrians are an afterthought, and there is not much provision for them. Urban planning and convience food are the culprits. When I've lived in Australia, I've really struggled to remain active. When I've lived in Europe, I've walked 2 hours everyday without even planning to.
