Hey, I am about to buy a phone and have not decided to get a plan yet or pay as you go? In addition, I am looking at getting a tri band phone since the models here are much better than the ones back home (Canada). Does anyone know of good models? Thanks

If it's not GSM then it won't work in Canada. 99% of Korean hand phones are built on a W-CDMA (HSDPA) network. Which is a more advanced version of Sprint's and Verizon's CDMA2000.

They have GSM roaming in Korea, but it's crazy expensive.

Wrong on all counts.

First of all, the name of WCDMA is misleading. It's actually the 3G successor to GSM, not CDMA. Several Canadian carriers, including Rogers, are building their 3G networks on the WCDMA standard.

And second, there is no GSM roaming in Korea because there is no GSM network in Korea. The 2/2.5G networks are CDMA (like Sprint or Verizon, but different frequencies) and the 3G networks are WCDMA. An overseas phone will roam on the Korean 3G network IF it is 3G voice capable.

Are you sure about that?

Yup.

Notice that GSM users have to put their SIM into a rented handset (I'm guessing a 3G handset). That's because there's no GSM network in Korea. If there were, your GSM handset would work right off the plane. Notice that CDMA users can use their own handsets in Korea. Not so for GSM because no network exists.
