My recruiter (the person who handled by current PS job) is bugging me about a summer camp (of course, she wants to get paid for a hiree, duh)
My strong inclination is to say no - I was thinking of vacationing in Indonesia.. having a good time.. getting away from this restrictive and funless (for me anyways) culture and environment.
that said.. as I peruse airfares they are PREPOSTEROUS!!!!! (TO ANYWHERE!)
I suppose 2.5 mil for 3 weeks isn't bad dough all things considered.
and I could still get away for a week... I suppose....
anyone done "a camp"??
what does one DO exactly?
are you actually teaching/working the entire 8 hours? (the hours are 9-5)
it's at a uni.. which would be interesting..
but it's a 40-45 minute subway ride from my city... and I HATE commuting. |

Yes, I've done many English camps. They vary wildly regarding how hard you have to work -- from the Bataan Death March of camps down in Jinju to some that were only about 6 hours of teaching per day with weekends off.
This being Korea you just may have to come up with your own ciriculum. If so, I recommend a fair % of movies.
Harry Potter English, anyone? |

It's a 'no brainer'. Go to Bali or Lombok... go to see Borobrodur... say "Oooom." Get a massage on the beach, go jet skiing and drink Bintang! |

I've taught many camps.
If you only have 4 weeks vacation and it takes up 3 weeks...hmm...tough call.
Well, if you are worried about airfare, then that would take care of that and you'd have a VERY GOOD week.
If money isn't an issue, it is real nice to have a full month off as well to just roam around and still have guaranteed income/job sitting there when you come back. (It isn't every job in the world that you can take off for a month with a job waiting for you at the end of it, always good to take advantage of that too).
Either way, you can't go wrong. |

actually, from the e-mail I received (will verify ), it seems I can also work in a one week or two week increment.
which means for a week, I can make 800 bucks, enough to cover airfare, or most of it, for the balance of three weeks.
which is SOMEWHAT tempting.
if I were to do one nearby, I think I'd do it. (for a week)
but to get to this place.. 20 minute plus walk to subway and then 40 minute ride.. and then god knows how many minutes from subway to said uni.
that alone will probably disqualify it. |

yeah, I'd say do the 2 wk stint - but don't do it for less than 1 mil/week - that's the going rate - which goes up the closer it gets to camp time.
now they are trying to book teachers at the lower rates but I promise you - come camp time they will be trying anything to fill empty spots.
btw, a 4 wk camp is almost always a nightmare - and it takes more than a week to come down from the stress - just something to think about. |
