Korea's U.N. tab accumulating, again


Despite the Seoul government's pledge to become a "responsible" U.N. member, Korea's debt to the world body are fast accumulating, government officials said.

With a vast expansion of the costly U.N. peacekeeping operations each year, Korea's arrears to the United Nations are estimated to reach approximately $56.8 million at the end of this year, the officials said.

On the occasion of the Seoul visit by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, it is anticipated that Korea's failure to keep up with its mushrooming U.N. payments will take top priority again, they said. Ban arrived in Seoul yesterday for a four-day stay, which will include meetings with President Lee Myung-bak.

Korea's U.N. debt reached a critical level in 2005 - nearly $100 million - and rose to $100.1 million by 2006. Ban, who was campaigning to become U.N. chief at the time, often faced criticism that his home country was seriously indebted to the United Nations.

Seeing as how the U.S owns $1.3 billion (according to wiki) I wouldn't be worrying too much about a (by comparision) measly $56.8 million.

The U.N. has always had problems with members not paying...Korea is hardly unique or even the biggest debtor.

Why give the UN more cash?

They are doing nothing to resolve the world's crises.


The UN is known as "the Golden Goose" by its employees, btw. ie they get all sorts of benefits, air tickets and money for basically doing nothing.
