It's tacky, the plot's facile, the acting's crappy, the songs are cheesey, the dancing's lame, it's about the last thing I'd pay to watch, and, not surprisingly, my middle school kids love, love, love it. They all want to keep watching it during break and hopefully finish it the next block if the next teacher will let them. Today I left my DVD player in a classroom and three girls - generally lazy and uninterested students - had stayed behind at lunch to finish watching it. I've never had post-exam, time-killing movie 'lessons' where no one wanted to sleep. I think part of the reason is that unlike Harry Potter or Finding Nemo, no one's ever seen it before.

Also, it's 91 minutes long so it's perfect for two periods, and rated (12).

No, no, it's not a guessing game. The movie is actually called High School Musical, by Disney.

I've actually been showing the Sound of Music lately to some of my after school classes. They really love it as best I can tell from studying their facial expressions as they watch it.

Turns out they even know some geography and history. I didn't tell them what movie I was putting on, they asked where the opening mountain scenes were and they started naming all the Alps countries (except for Austria), one even guessed "Alps." They realized that it was just prior to WWII. I was pleasantly impressed. Of course, these were some of the best students at my MS.
