The writer should have mentioned that the swastika was used in Europe by the ancient Greeks, Macedonians, Celts, and Romans. It was also used indepently in North and Central America, most notably by the Navajo and Mayans,

Did these Westerners sleep through middle and high school history?

Ya... I knew about the use of that sign in other belief systems from a grade two class I had where a first nations woman told us about it's use.

How ignorant are people if they are "shocked?"

"I didn't know Buddhist monks were also Nazis, honey. I'm sorry for bringing you to this country."
"Oh, I don't mind Hitler, sweetie, it's the damn staring and shoving that makes me miss Oklahoma."

I have a set of Rudyard kipling books that have swastikas on the spine. I think it's the Sahib Edition.

I'm surprised that not a single individual has yet to mention that the two symbols are mirror images of each other.

The Buddhist symbol "turns" left...if you will.

The Nazi symbol "turns" right.

Yes...there are "male" and "female" versions of the swastika in Buddhism...thus the right and left "bends" in their markings...

However...you will find the "female" left turn version on a vast majority of Buddhist artwork and temples.

Furthermore...the Buddhist swastika can be identified by its true right angles...a flat horizontal and vertical shape.

The Nazi symbol is most frequently designed in a diagonal pattern...appearing in more of a diamond type shape.

Symbols...different meanings in different designs.

That is possibly the most ignorant statement I have ever read on this board! I hope you are aware that not only Jews were persecuted by the Nazis. You are an idiot, yes, it's true.

I am shocked when it's not a Buddhist(spelled-right?) symbol. It's just like the Confederate Flag in the South U.S. More people than Jews were murdered...Poles, homosexuals, any one not deemed right.... Sad

Just so, Germans may be the most shocked because we have been conditioned for over 60 years now to reject this symbol. Here in Asia people are far less negative about the swastika even in a Nazi context, and in Korea you can definitely get in more trouble wearing a rising sun t-shirt than a swastika...

In Thailand there's plenty of Reichsflagge-turned-t-shirt worn and the Wehrmacht helmet is popular with "tough" bikers... I think I've seen that in Korea already, too.
