I'm voting for him, but this aspect is unsettling.

Obama's party is against the FTA. That won't help.

But who knows. People can do desperate things in an attempt to jump-start a weak economy.

Vote Obama.

If McCain and Palin get into the White House it's ALL over.

when are you people going to figure out the the President's influence over the exchange rate... and the economy overall is either nil or minimal at best?

there are some exceptions, if Congress goes along (e.g. Clinton's paying off debt in late 90's and running surpluses, which he was forced into by Gingrich Congress which didn't want to give him his 'stimulus package')

but generally speaking... Presidents are just along for the ride and they have zero impact on the economic cycle.

that's why I always laugh my ass off when one candidate or another pledges to "fix the economy".

I think the economy generally gets worse for at least a few months after the election regardless of which side wins. The voting is split almost equally and half the people think its about the end of the world when their side loses. It takes a few months for people to gain confidence or become complacent.

In this case, when things are going to hell in a hand basket already it is hard to predict. I am voting for Obama because I am convinced that McCains policy will worsen the economy as well as our relationships abroad for the entire period he remains in office.

With each debate, Obama's lead in the Electoral College strengthens. Of course presidents don't control the economy, but their policies have obvious impacts on it. Anyone who can't see that is a fool--just look at the current mess. Isn't it largely the result of bad policies chosen as a result of radical belief in laissez-faire economics? Had Clinton's policies continued, the $5 trillion debt of 2001 could have been reduced $1 or $2 trillion instead of ballooning to $10 trillion.

One of the lessons learned in the Great Depression was that trade protectionism is self-defeating. My guess is that the FTA with Korea will pass, although possibly in a revised form.

Unless the FTA with Korea is proven to hurt American Industries. It happened between Canada and the US with Softwood Lumber, to some extent with Fishing and Beef. Americans are great at one thing.. Producing lawyers, Canada fought back with their Lawyers but USA had 10 times more to fight back with. I was tought by one of the people that ratified NAFTA and they said US had every upper hand.

If people in the states start screaming that foreign imports are hurting their industries and people don't and can't get jobs the FTA will be slapped with injuctions and effectively destroying Korea. Politicians protect their ridings and their voters, this is a very real possibility.

Don't be Naive be on your toes thats all I got to say.

I agree that the president has very little, if any, direct control over the economy and markets, but I think when ( I hope) he becomes president, there will be a renewal in confidence that will alleviate some of the pressure we are seeing today.

It's not just Obama... his party hates the FTA. They're in control of the congress, by the way.

If Lee Myung Bak didn't sign the FTA, the won would be doing much better right now. Signing the FTA forced LMB to work to lower the value of the won to promote a higher volume of exports (cheaper Koreans cars / electronic imports in the US). The FTA tied the Korean won into playing second fiddle to the US dollar for a long time into the future. The FTA is a done deal and who the next US president is irrelevant now.

English Teachers here shouldn't expect the high wages based on the strong won we had under Noh, Hyun's protectionist economy.

No, that's where you're wrong. Jokes are funny and there is NOTHING funny about the possibility of those two psychos being elected.
