Some time has passed since the Taean oil spill.

My question: is it safe to swim on the West Coast? And what about eating seafood?

We're heading to Deokjeokdo, which is a little bit more north, and have heard that the water is still a little oily. Any confirmation?

I've heard that half or more of the beaches that were normally open will remain closed this year because of oil remnants, but can't confirm which beaches those are. your best bet is probably to find out what the locals are doing.

It's been less than 6 months. Don't even think it.

We were just in Taean for the Lily Festival over the weekend, and went to the beach. At least in the Taean area the water is fine, and there is no residue from the oil spill. Now this was around Mongsanpo Beach which is about 1/2 hour drive down the coast. There seemed to be a lot of activity on the beach and we actually went in the water and it was fine.

Again, this was only in one area, so it doesn't guarantee that every area is okay for going out to the beach. Along the coastal area headed back up to Taean and Dangjin all seems well, but perhaps further down the coast it is not clear yet. This is firsthand info, so take it for what it's worth. My wife and I would not have taken the risk if there was even a hint of oil or residue in the area. It looks as if they have done a good clean up job in the Taean area.

But the ministry said waters off some coastal areas were still polluted with residue from the spill, while sand in those regions possessed higher-than-standard levels of oil. That's why there are worries that 13 out of 28 beaches in the region may not be able to open this summer. One Taean resident said, "You can still see oil if you dig 40 to 50 cm under the sand." Out of 59 islands off the coast of Taean, 22 still have sticky oil residue left on their coastlines or cliffs. And as the weather warms up, the oil that had sunk into the sand or between rocks has begun to seep out into the ocean. There are fears of a second contamination.

this was from the Chosun as of April, can't imagine in two months they have gone from that to "not a hint of oil".

i heard it takes about 3 years for oil to sink deep enough through the shoreline for it to begin properly recovering.
