My contract and visa expire 31st August (sunday)

my school has told me that I MUST be in korea 30th and 31st of august to complete my contract and receive my severence pay, even although these days are saturday and sunday and I am not working.

Anyway, if my visa expires on the 31st am I right in saying that , without any kind of extension, I must leave the country within 24 hours. So I must leave by 1st September?

My school has even told me that I cannot book a flight home on 31st august at 11.55pm because I have to leave on 1st september. They are not willing to budge on this position and they phoned the gyeonggi provance office for confirmation, who agreed with my school.

Check the date on your ARC. That date governs your permission to stay in Korea, NOT the date on the visa in your passport.

You have until 11:59 pm on the date indicated on your ARC to leave Korea. There is no grace period. Even an overstay of a few hours can lead to problems. They may waive the fine, but you'll almost certainly be delayed and lectured, and it could complicate matters if you decide to return to Korea.

If the school refuses to budge on the departure date, you can obtain a temporary extension (up to 30 days) from Immigration. Book your ticket, then take it along with your passport and ARC to the Immigration office. They will extend your permission of stay up til your date of departure. This type of extension is FREE. (It may also be obtained online, without a trip to Immi, at http://www.hikorea.go.kr).

Ut Videum is spot on there.

If the school is reimbursing you for the flight home then it's best just to pander to their pedantic manner. Take your ticket, passport, ARC to immigration and get the short extension and leave after the 1st. It's very easy so don't stress too much about it you have plenty of time.

where can I find this information on the internet so I can show it to my school?

They keep on telling me that the contract says I have 10 days, however I informed them that the contract and my Alien card are two different things.

No, your contract says you must leave within 10 days or they won't pay for your airfare (so if you stay and just change employers, they are off the hook for the ticket).

Your status of sojourn is determined by the expiry date on your ARC and you MUST leave or get an extension BEFORE said expiry date:
