though i've been a longtime reader, i only recently signed up. this is my glorious first post. woo hoo!
for quite some time, i have been considering making the move to korea. before i do, i would really appreciate some advice regarding a few points:
1) judging from the threads on this board, flying over to look for work in person seems the best route (visiting school, seeing accomodations, having face time with other teachers, etc), providing that airfare and 1 month of living can be covered. would you agree?
2) what do you think is the likelihood of an employer reimbursing for (at least part of) the trip? only wishful thinking? something better resolved by trying to negociate a higher salary?
3) despite the split-shift, i am really hoping to teach adults. i presume that seoul, busan, daegu are my best bets, because of their large populations. is there a particular time of the year that is best? is before or after the new year better? and is it possible to get pay in the order of 2.2 for such work?
4) given the risks involved, are many teachers really doing privates? hey. why don't i make that a poll?!
thanks for any advice.
cheers,
bsd

Your best bet is to line up multiple interviews and ask in advance if they will reimburse for airfare. They still might not, but I am a firm believer it's best to fly over first and see the places for yourself.
Bottom line: Korean hagwon owners lie like crazy. You need to see who is truthful, and what school you like. |
