Oh boy.
You need to have your International Licence, or you need to have had your Korean licence for over one year in order to rent a car in mainland Korea. In Jeju-do, you can get away with just having a valid Korean license or an International License (they don't seem to care about when you got the licence).
For four days, it cost my friend and I sixty-something dollars each (total was W130,000) with W30,000 of insurance (%10 = covers W300,000 worth of damage).
Not sure what the price is around Seoul but I'm assuming it's the same (we used Budget).

People in Korea hire cars for months at a time. It would be better and cheaper to hire a car for a few months rather than a day or two. It is very common for people to hire a car, get all the service stuff included and pay a small amount. However, a small deposit is required to pay for the hire car. When I went to Jeju for a holiday over Chuseok, I decided to hire a car for a week and it cost 5만원. |

My experience seems to be different to some of the above, so I guess it can vary a lot. Maybe you need to negotiate with car rentals here.. perhaps quite aggressively?
Anyway I rented a Samsung SM5 for 2 days, for $70 a day. This is a bargain price in my opinion. I had a Korean licence but no international licence. I'd had my Korean licence less than 2 months. I didn't give the car rental company any deposit or credit card, just a copy of my licence.
The SM5 was a lovely car to drive, a decent size and with lots of toys to play with. I liked it a lot. I'm surprised I got anything more than a Matiz for $70 a day.
(This was in Daegu, not Jejudo by the way)
I had no difficulties whatsoever.. it took about 1 minute to do the paperwork.
I guess some of the posters above had a tougher time hiring cars though. So.. results may vary? |
