I've applied to CDI's camp and they asked me to prepare an essay on a given topic. I thought about how this and a whole lot of other things are quite standard for positions in the west involving teaching - among other things - basic essay-writing skills. Fine. I do it.
I ask them to please answer a couple of questions before I hand in the essay, standard things like, 'how will it be marked? TOEFL system? Non-TOEFL system?' 'Are we using British or American spelling?' and 'how many other applicants are writing an essay?'.
The answer I got was 'you do not have to take the essay this seriously. We will use [CDI]'s own matrix to gauge the logicality/structure of the essay.'
Am I involved in a sham? I'm under the impression that any employer who wants to see a sample essay from a prospective teacher has already decided to take the application process very seriously, and would already have answers ready for these and other questions. |

It's just one of the small hoops they'll have you jumping through. What's in the essay isn't as imporatant as your ability to follow their orders.
Keep it light, convey enthusiasm and energy, and you'll be fine. |
