I am going on my visa run soon, to Fukuoka. I've never been there. Can anyone recommend a convenient and/or cool place to stay?
Cheers! |

The Hotel Chisan is great; walking distance to Canal City and downtown. Very good breakfast buffet and the hotel staff speak English well and are helpful and friendly. Small but nice rooms and reasonably priced.
The best part for me is that they let me make a reservation without a credit card or deposit.
I don't have a website but I'm sure you can Google it. |

The above mentioned hostel is a good option if you want to save cash, although it's a bit away from the main nightlife areas.
If you're ok with spending around 5,000 - 6,000 yen, the I'd recommend this hotel chain.

Click on Fukuoka Prefecture on the map and there are 5 in Fukuoka City ( Hakata means Fukuoka!). The one in Nishi-Nakasu would be the best location, followed by the one in Gion. You can book online and if you do you can get your 5% consumption tax refunded.
Are you getting there by ferry or plane? If ferry, there's a bus from the terminal downtown. If plane, there's no bus downtown from the international terminal any more. You have to get the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal and take the subway from there. |

Alternatively you could ask at the tourist information desk at the airport arrivals terminal. They speak excellent English, will ask what your requirements are, and show you a brochure with pictures and details of various hotels that meet your requirements. Once you pick a place, they will call and make a reservation, give you a map, and print out a document that you had to the receptionist when you arrive at the hotel. Then just pay the bill. Easy! |

Thanks for the tips!
Another question: Which neighborhood is the Korean consulate in? And, is this close to any sightseeing? I wonder if I could stay in one area and kill 2 birds with one stone on limited time. |

if you buy your ferry tkt from Kangsan Travel they have a package deal which includes a night at the Central Hotel, very plush, also free breakfast buffet, good place, have stayed there twice. easy to find, nice nabe, they know the consulate and can tell you how to get there - bus lines are just down the street.
Kangsan's number is all over Dave's just search around some old threads, you might want to check the visa run threads on the Travel forum, btw |

Just get off at Hakata station and look around the nearby streets for 30 minutes. Plenty of cheap hotels.
Nice area too. central location. |

Make sure you have a reservation. The Japenese are very, very racist against white people. They will likely turn you away and say they do not have a room, just because you are white. It's true. |

And oh yeah, did I mention how racist the Japanese are? That's one country I won't ever be going back to.
Well.... I wouldn't mind seeing Tokyo actually. |

Nah. I've never been turned away from a Japanese motel. And I've never ever even made a reservation. just pitched up.
They do of course have plenty love motels, but these places are for short-time stays. You cannot spend the night there unless you check in at about 1am. My guess is you probably unwittingly tried to book into one of these places. |
