I leave for Korea with SMOE in two months.....I mentioned around them how much privates can bring and joked how it's illegal, but you won't get caught(unless your stupid). I don't plan on doing much if at all(I'm lazy), but if the opportunity comes my way for the right price....why not?

Well My uncle who's a cabbie picked up some 40 yr. old women who lost her job and *suprise* is coming to Korea for the same job on the same flight. She mentioned how she was scared of doing privates for fear of getting caught. He relayed this to my parents who are not hounding me for a promise never to do privates.....They're absolutely convinced I'm gonna get caught....My parents are acting like it's drug smuggling or it will ruin my life.

I could care less what they think, but I still have deal with them.... Rolling Eyes

No, but they think I'm an idiot who'd easily do something illegal in a foreign country for some quick cash....

Well....they're not half wrong..... Wink

Stupidity isn't the only way to get caught. Jealous neighbors and vengeful, angry ex-girlfriends have also been known to play their part.

What is the penalty for teaching privates? Is it the same penalty as teaching without proper qualifications?
For some reason I think it is around 6 months in the pokey. But I've never seen anything officially stating that.
I did know a guy was busted and he had to stay locked up in immigration till someone could get him money for a plane ticket and they could process him. All together he was in for about a week. He was married to a Korean too.

A bit off topic, but a few of you mentioned you were just hired for the SMOE.... How long did you guys have to wait between submitting your application and receiving word back about an interview?

Actually, the government has just introduced public flogging for such activity. Ten lashes per private that you are caught doing. Your parents should be very concerned.

tell your parents to chillax....the likely scenario is you would be fined thousands of dollars and deported

also keep in mind if you plan on doing privates, try not to talk or write about how you want to do them, or give details about them when you have them

The penalty is 4 bottles of soju, a big can of kimchi, and being forced to live in a xenophobic society....

Dude, your parents can't save you here. Do what you have to do to survive (and maybe even make a bit of money) in Korea. Then, move on. Don't forget the last part.
