I've been asked by the university that is going to employ me in the fall to get a letter of agreement from my current university? Has anyone ever been ask for this document before? I'm not sure if they are asking for a release letter (which I don't think I'd need because a) my contract will be finished and b) I'm on an F-2 visa).

Anyway, if someone could shed some light on this I'd appreciate it.

I have had it happen before. It is standard procedure at many universities as far as I know. The letter is an 'employment verification' letter and most places should have a standard protocol in place for printing one out for you. Your new place of employment just want to be absolutely sure you will be free from any employment obligations from your old uni before the new uni hires you.
