What would do with 5 weeks vacation. My heart tells me to just lay in Thailand for the whole duration, but I'd like some other suggestions.
Of course on a budget. I have to make sure my expenses cover the whle 5 weeks. Thanks |

Better plan on 2 countries.
You only get 30 days on a visa waiver stamp when you head to Thailand. |

If it's Summer vacation, I'd go to Japan, China, Europe, or other northern temperate climate places and then do tropical places for Winter vacations.
The southern Thai warned me not to travel on land down to Malaysia as there's a military situation going on, but you might get the latest news as you're traveling and find you can pass. It's kinda an unknown until you try, but risky. They advise to fly to KL, Malaysia.
I took 10 weeks in Thailand and Cambodia. 4 in Thailand, 2 in Cambodia, and another 4 in Thailand back in the 1st part of this year and it was just the greatest time of my life, so far. There's so much more to see, do, and enjoy than what you could in a lifetime... Just get a good sampling of some places like Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Ayuttia, Phuket, Khao Sok, Koh Samui islands, and many others. Guide books with maps and info tremendously help out with planning and navigating. You'll meet so many cool people for snapshot friendships in your travels of SE Asia. I love it and going again.
I understand you can get a 60 day Thai tourist visa if you apply and get it before departure in Seoul or in another major city of the world.
Bali, Java, and Borneo are said to be good during our Summer if you want to go somewhere really far and exotic this Summer. I'm going to Japan and maybe Hong Kong in August and then the far south tropics next January. Go jetset go...
Next Summer India, Dubai, Egypt, and Europe on the itinerary. There's always more than one could do in a lifetime, even if one were a super rich constantly jetset billionaire. Just enjoy what you can pull off.

The extreme south end of Thailand can be a little rough on the system to say the least.
... advises against all travel to the far southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, and Songkhla (including the city of Hat Yai), where almost daily attacks continue to occur including attacks with firearms, bombings, beheadings, arson, and attacks with knives. There have been numerous deadly attacks on both military and civilian targets in 2008.
On June 23, 2008, the State Railway of Thailand indefinitely suspended all train service on the Southern Line between Hat Yai - Yala - Sungai Kolok following an armed attack aboard a passenger train which left four people dead. All rail services from Bangkok now terminate at Hat Yai in Songkhla province. On March 15, 2008, a car bomb exploded in the parking lot of a popular hotel and conference venue in Pattani, killing two and wounding thirteen. On September 16, 2006, bombs exploded in Hat Yai (Songkhla Province), killing several foreigners, including one Canadian.
A curfew has been declared in Taha and Bannang Sata Districts of Yala province between 20:00 and 04:00. Dressing in military or police style clothing is prohibited. New arrivals in the district must register with the military and usage and possession of radio communication equipment is prohibited.

ICN to BKK return is approaching the $1000US mark at the moment with all the fuel surcharges. Infact there are a number of carriers charging north of $1200US return Korea to Thailand! Four years ago, I paid $300US return.
But for $1500 you could go all the way to Europe, which in the current climate probably represents much better value for money.
If it were me, I would do something like Turkey and Russia - best time of year to visit both. |
