I don't think so. Money talks and bullshit walks. Special mention to Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore, but Eddie was a trendsetter in a room full of trendsetters. |

I agree, the best geetar player is from what ever your favorite style of music is. If you like rock then you would lean towards EVH or Randy Rhodes. If you like blues then SRV or Muddy Waters. you get the idea. I like punk rock so I would probally say Johnny Ramone. Dez from Black Flag was pretty good as well as than guy from the Replacements. Bob Stinson? He died. |

I've seen this vid before.
The guy's got decent rhythm, and is pretty talented overall, but this clip is certainly not deserving of the title "impossible guitar" -- I've seen many street buskers who can effect this style equally well.
Nor should it be called "Eddie van Halen for eggheads" -- the time signatures aren't really that odd at all.
I'm no huge Van Halen fan, but Eddie's got more talent in his baby finger. |

what makes a guitar player good is how his playing makes you feel.
some dipshit speeding around the block to impress chicks has nothing on someone who can play one note in such a way that it makes you want to fight, *beep* or cry.
(that said, i didn't watch the videos with sound, i'm at work - it's just the insinuation that there are degrees of bestness with something as subjective as music makes me want to burn down houses.) |

I've seen buskers tearing it up in similar fashion also.
Here, Robot - have you got the album 'Drums of Passion' by Babatunde Olatunji? It's right up your street in terms of polyrhythms and unusual timings and I know you're rubbing yourself over such things at the moment. It's from the '50s, but the 'beatz' is still 'fresh'. Get it on the d-low, like. |

In my OP I referred to talent as one thing and trendsetting another. Obviously there are some musicians who are more talented than others. But, what sets apart the truly talented from the merely talented is their abilities to change the face of music. I am certain there are legions of 16 year olds who can play circles around any number of well known musicians, but what effect have they had on the world of music. That is not a subjective argument, it is an objective argument, and EVH has had a truly profound effect on an entire generation of players. That fact, simply cannot be denied. |
