With all the confusion about getting a CRC done while in Korea, I thought I'd share how I went about doing it. First I'm Canadian and live in Ottawa.
(1) April 1st. Went to Ottawa Police website. Followed step by step instructions.
(2) Printed off form, filled it out, photocopied Drivers License and Passport. Wrote a letter asking police to mail Criminal Check to Canadian Embassy, provided address. Again, followed directions as per website.
(3) Mailed letter to my mom on April 2nd and asked her to drop it off at the police station. She did and wrote a check for $45. (I figured this was easier and cheaper than getting an international money order and mailing it directly. My mom lives 10 minutes from the main cop shop.)
(4) The cops processed my info right in front of my mom. They told her it would be done within 3 days.
(5) Received phone call from Canadian Embassy on April 29th. The CRC had arrived.
(6) Printed off directions to Embassy from website. Went this morning, May 7th. Embassy notarized it for 47,500 Won. Took 5 minutes. (But 1.5 hour each way by subway).
Hope this helps...

Yes all this was done while I was working in Korea. This info is meant for people who need a CRC but are still in Korea. I guess I should have stated that. Also it included the Vulnerable Sector Check.
Transcripts don't need to be notarized. I bought three copies last year, used one and have two in my possession. My university printed them off and put each one in an Official university envelope, then placed a University Seal where the flap meets the body of the envelope.
I sent my original degree and was given it back within the first week of employment by my school. I will submit this same degree for my next VISA. |

Good info. Did you have to provide prints to the Ottawa police? |

On the Ottawa Police Website it says
Quote: |
You need to attend any of our police stations in person to obtain any of the following:
* Copy of a Police Report
* Criminal Records Check
* Police Records Check
|
Did you get by this because your mother went in herself to hand in all the required documents? |

No fingerprints. And on my criminal check it says that "no records have been found" but that it "was not verified by fingerprints." But immigration has clearly said that RCMP checks are not mandatory. I believe only the RCMP does fingerprint checks. |

Not at all. Keep looking on the website because there is a clear link that says what to do if you are needing a criminal check and are not in Canada. It even goes so far as to say "If you are teaching overseas" .... Very uptodate site....I was impressed. I gather the Ottawa Police was tired of getting the same question and decided to update their website. Hopefully other cities do the same. |

so im trying to get my police check sorted out, and im really confused.
this check thru ottawa, is it a local or a national check?
i keep getting mixed answers about what i need. some ppl are saying rcmp with fingerprints. that will take 3 months, and i dont have enough time for that.
ideally i can get a quicker one. i lived in brantford On. do i have to get one done there? or can i do the ottawa one linked here?
im hoping that i can do the vulnerable sector one thru the ottawa website, w/o fingerprints, and have it notorized at the canadian embassy.
any help with answers would be greatly appreciated! |

I applied and received my CRC in under a month from the Winnipeg police department, now that I have gone through the process my recruiter tells me I need a vulnerable search check done as well. There is a contact number regarding the search, Winnipeg police record department 986-6073 , looks like I will have to go through another application and another wait to get the documents that are required. I am not bit**ing , I can understand why they need the check it is just too bad that I haven't read or heard anything about this on Daves... by the way here is the internet address of the Winnipeg police department http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/BPR/info_request.stm , very simple process, two pieces of copied id, bank draft, check, etc... they even pay for the stamp back to you... |

If you're already in Korea, you do NOT need a VSS.
The VSS is NOT required by Korean Immigration. Some (not all) of the Korean consulates in Canada got the bright idea that they would require a VSS, and hence they won't notarize a background check without one.
But once again, if you're already in Korea and you have the Winnipeg check in hand, you're golden. Take it to the embassy, make a statutory declaration that the CRC is authentic, get it notarized, and you're good to go. |

I tried this method. However, it only works for citizens that have resided in Ottawa ONLY.
They emailed me and said they were unable to process my information because I wasn't a resident of Ottawa. Now they are sending everything back. |

Think carefully. How would one get transcripts notarized and still have them sealed in the envelope? |
