I have a portable gps here in the states, and i use it a lot at home just as a 'mapquest' sort of thing to get directions. i was thinking this would be super useful if i had one that would work in south korea. i cant find anything on the internet about one existing (especially with english capabilities). does anybody know of a sk gps devise? even if not, what about a google maps or mapquest version of south korea?

If you're not joking, this is THE land of the gps navigation. Almost every car has one, in part (I think) due to the fact that there are virtually no street signs or building numbers.

They're also very cheap and multi-functional. I purchased one recently for 200 bucks or so and it had 8GB of storage, MP3 capabilities, DMB (Korean satellite TV for free), and other cool junk.

One place you can go look at several models on display is Technomart in Seoul on the East side of the Green line. Look for Gangbyeon station. You can also find them at Yongsan station's building, or at COEX mall. They're even for sale in Kyobo book stores.

They're all over.

Here's a site with prices on one popular brand: Inavi (not in English):

This model is the newest and best of all out there (as far as maps), but they also charge for updates:

Guaranteed to kick any US navi product in the butt.

That looks ridiculous. I wouldn't even look at the road, I'd just look at the little car on the screen and turn the wheel thinking it's a computer game. Hell, I'd still be better than all the Korean drivers. Half of them just watch dramas on it while driving through downtown Seoul!

I have no car but I love gadgets. Is there anything that can be used by a pedestrian (or just for riding on the bus)? Maybe with a PMP integrated?

I've looked around for a proper handheld GPS device, but all I can find are the dashboard types.

Well, you can get an Inavi PNS model, which you can carry around with you. That's technically a hand-held.

I have a Garmin Nuvi that I use here in the states, and I know I can use it anywhere in the world. It's unbelievably useful...but I wouldn't walk around the streets with it, but it's easily replaced by a map.

Geez, you must be new...

.. and I don't know what happened to Congnameul.

English maps are pretty much useless in Korea because, well .. everything goes by the Korean name. Learn how to spell and navigate like a champ!
