So, you want a computer but moving that big thing around looks frightening. Well, the answer is micro or mini ATX pc's. Mini atx's have a board size of 6 x 6 inches, micros 9 x 9. Add the case and in the case of the micros, you have a case about the size of an LP record but a little fatter. Those you can put into the suitcase. Mini's are harder to come by, about a year a go they were a rage, the motherboards come with on board sound video and TV. Many of these were put out with an embedded CPU and you can find 1 GHZ models for about $150.

Erm... call me stupid, but isn't that what laptops are for? Same spec, only a tenth of the size and weight, and completely portable. |

Yeah but notebooks are 2.5mil+ for the same specs you can get in those mini boxes, yet the mini boxes are 600k-1mil won.
It's all about the price. |

Just don't by a "Dream" system. Those boards are slower than molasses in January!
Also, these mini-systems always have the DVD/CD player mounted sideways. I HATE that. You can't use a mini-CD without laying the computer down on its side. Otherwise, you end up jamming the drive with a mini-CD. Done that before -- what a pain to fix! |

I've discovered I smash all portable devices I own. I have many memories of walkmans falling off my belt and smashing into millions of pieces and bouncing toward the sky in slo mo further accelerated by the speed of my bicycle travel at the time. I also spill coke on them etc.. I can get 6 of these things for the price of a laptop. Thats why they appeal to me. |

Those minisystems made in Korea might suck, but my buddy bought one from the states and he says it is faster than anything he has had before.

It all comes down to the motherboard and chip.
Shuttle is a very good board. |
