Ok, I just have a question here...is this a Daegu thing or is this happening in every Costco across Korea...the free onions...my god! You would think it is the last cup of water in the world.

I get a hotdog, but before I load some toppings on, I grab a cola. I notice this woman on the onion machine given'er! Just turning the handle, covering every possible square inch around her pizza with onions...then she goes and douses them with ketchup and mustard...freaking disgusting IMO. Then I go to put a little onion on my hotdog and there is not a speck/slice/bit left...f-bomb it pissed me off! Did she really need to take them all? What would a dump look like the next day with so much onion, mustard and ketchup in your guts...my god!

I have noticed this many times at Costco in Daegu, is it just here? Do they just milk the free onions to no avail in other towns, or is Daegu just a city that tradionally had problem growing onions? That maybe when they see the young-pa they go hog wild! Let me know what happens in your local Costco....

sign, onionless

Actually, some people just bring the onions at home with them. It's not a 'Korean' thing. The people who do that are just petty thieves (although my wife thinks they are just plain crazy).

Laughing Laughing Laughing I've noticed the Koreans grinding the onion machine like they're mining for gold. They go crazy over that thing.

I thought they were just enjoying the onion machine because it's a novelty for them. Smile

If you can speak Korean, you should joke "Would you like a hot dog with your onions?"

If Costco were smart, they'd sell onion machines. I bet some of these people would buy one.

Haha, I've seen that in Daegu Costco, too. Maybe they're loading up to make a 'deluxe platter' to share with friends (that looks abundant) then throw the onions/ketchup mess leftover in the garbage.

That clam chowder. They don't make it there. Just open a jumbo can of Campbell's clam chowder soup. Saw them stacked in the foodcourt storeroom, thru the open door, when a mop jockey flew out (in shiny, red vinyl, ankle-length apron looking like a superhero fashion victim).

I've always thought it was because of the almost pathological need for a Korean to have side dishes with their food. Even my wife will fall for it and have to ask for pickles when we go somewhere where there aren't side dishes (a la Korea).

My favorite is when they have a whole extra plate purely devoted to the onions. I've seen a family of four (or a pair of teenage boys) cover an entire plate with onions, then cover it in mustard and mix it up.

My favorite was the near-riot when the machine was empty. There were, literally, 25 Koreans all crowding around the machine while it was being refilled. Of course, I had to push my way through them to get the little bit of ketchup for my hotdog.

I agree with the OP... so, freaking, gross.

Koreans are shameless thieves. I see this behavior at my Costco in Seoul as well. The Koreans won't even buy anything- they just load up on the onions so that when i come with my hot dog there is nothing left.

I've met many Koreans who openly admit to this behavior with pride. I think they're just very greedy people.

Last week at work, all the staff had a huge lunch and everyone was sitting around gut busted. As soon as word came that the business next door to us was inviting us to their grand opening buffet all the Koreans assembled and attacked it like wolves. Nobody finished even half of what they took but they seemed quite pleased about their plunder.

You idiots! It's called onion high. Koreans know that if you eat a lot of onions it has the same effect as peyote. Ketchup and mustard make the effects of onion high last longer. They get all whacked out and hopped up on onions and then start shopping. They continuously bump their carts into you not because they are rude, but because they are loaded out of their #@$%ing minds on onions.

Onions like garlic are very good for your health. I believe onions are like a natural anti-biotic. That could be a reason for having a lot of onions, because Koreans have a lot of onions in their diet and that sort of thing.
I am not familiar with the onion machine. I must check that out at Costco. I didn't see any crazy behaviour at the Costo near Yeungdong-po just that some ajumas were moving too slowly. Guys, I think calling Koreans thieves wholesale is kind of immature and racist for those doing that. You can't generalize a whole people.

They also like to take at least 5 packets of relish when they buy one slice of pizza.
