Why are these things so popular in Korea? Because they can (though don't necessarily have to be) incredibly punishing processes of slow, painstaking accumulation. Whether your memorizing vocab and grammar or racking up magic points in the game, you are embarking on a tedious, almost endless journey of acquisition by minute increments.

I used to play Final Fantasy III on Super Nintendo, and once I maxed out the experience points on all of the characters by killing this little cactus enemy over and over. It must've been thousands of times. I've also made and memorized stacks of Korean flash cards that would go more than a foot high altogether. And both experiences were pointless and mind-numbingly boring. But that's just it -- they were wonderfully mind-numbing. I would enter a sort of trance-like state, probably some sort of lower plane of consciousness, and just while away the hours.

Perhaps the Korean school systems re-jiggers one's brain so that he/she is effectively stimulated by these kinds of pursuits. The real beauty of learning English is that it's endless and endlessly punishing.

This is has been my grand, unifying theory of the day. Tremble at my intellect.

Amusing.

But surely learning English requires more art and craft than playing WoW.

If you could make a massive online World of English edutainment game you'd be a billionnaire.

I got so bored with Wow I would listen to mp3s of Korean (you can download here) while I played. It actually was good Korean practice, as I wasn't really paying much attention to the game.

However, I bought a new video card (imported from the U.S. 8800 gts, and 4 gigs ram) and Age of Conan last week so i've been into that. I'll be bored soon and return to listening to my Korean mp3s, though the graphics are spectacular.

Enjoying the "grind," no matter what the task, isn't a measure of intelligence...nor is being conscious of it.

Just sayin'

Ah, WOW . . . I skipped out on my Korean lessons at the "Y" last year because of that game. "Well, my lesson's tomorrow. I suppose that I should look at the homework that I promised myself that I'd do. Nah, I think that I'll stay up until 5:00 AM and play WOW instead."

I'm proud of myself. I've been back in Korea for two months, and I've only played the game for about six hours. I've actually been doing productive things. Sure, you can be a productive person and still play WOW, but I have no self control.
