Yes I know; it's one of those rare, once-in-a-blue-moon events where the news about Korea is positive. Usually it's either
a) Dear Leader beefin'
b) beefin' about the beef
c) Plagiarism
d) stocks or strikes tankin'
You can get Time Asia at GS 25 or whatever, but if you're lazy (like me) you can just click here.

What do you get when you combine antisocial behavior, economic woes, and the Internet? South Koreans have created what might be the future of spectator sport |
It's a pretty good in-depth look into the e-sport/video game entertainment industry, with some historical context involved (1997 financial crisis). If you need something for your co-teachers or advanced learners to read and discuss, then give it a go.
Some of the conditions that produced the e-Sports wave have manifested themselves again: high prices; low consumer confidence; economic downturn, etc. Who know what will come out of the gaming industry this time; VR, a movie to game that doesn't suck (the holy grail of modern gaming), a MMORPG that isn't obtuse or have people walking around with 30ft genitals (Second Life), etc. |
