I'm planning on travelling for almost a year. I will be in Europe for about four months, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and perhaps even India.

What do you do with your money when you travel long term?
Should I buy up tons of traveller's checks, use my credit card, carry cash, probably all of the above, right? What are your recommendations for travelling long term?

1. Wire all the money to a trusted family member at home.

2. Then they can wire you money back in small amounts through Western Union or similar in each country as you go along.

Carry a couple thousand dollars in either Euros or USD (euros are less likely to experience large fluctuations in the short term and will save you the added expense of double conversions since you are heading to Europe).

Make use of the hotel safe (at the front desk) for safe keeping. Do NOT keep loads of cash in your room or in your luggage.

Plastic works as a backup plan (credit cards or ATM cards). Carry cash (Euros) to Europe and open an account with your cash and use their international ATM for your routine money transfers. DON'T depend on a Korean ATM to work when you are abroad.

Sending money home to a trusted family member and they having it sent back to you by Western union or bank wire is certainly doable but can get pretty expensive with charges as high as 22% on each transaction from WU.

TCs are an option but the ones issued in Korea are NOT THE SAME as the ones issued at home. If you run into problems getting a solution is problematic at best.

Walk into a bank with some cash and your passport.
