http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7488009.stm

Google must divulge the viewing habits of every user who has ever watched any video on YouTube, a US court has ruled.

The ruling comes as part of Google's legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.

Digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) called the ruling a "set-back to privacy rights".

The viewing log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video clip details.

While the legal battle between the two firms is being contested in the US, it is thought the ruling will apply to YouTube users and their viewing habits everywhere.

I've just deleted my account, mainly out of principle.

Unbelievable how frivolous the US courts have been with data protection. Google essentially knows absolutely everything about you already (how many of you have done a search on your own name, places you have been, worked etc.

As far as personal information goes, thank goodness I have little to hide. (Aside from torrenting stuff and teaching privates) I rarely use my real name online. Especially when posting my resume for illegal teaching jobs in Korea.

If I feel like watching copyrighted material on the internet, or uploading a video of drunken debauchery on youtube, I connect to my neighbor's wireless and use a pseudonym and fake email address.

But I usually don't.

Perhaps your 'principles' are a little overwrought: Google does not know "everything about you already." What personal information could you possible want to hide? If you really want to find 'dirt' on people, visit your county court house and ask to read court case minutes. Or visit your governor's office and demand to see their expenditures.

Rest your fears. All Viacom will know is that youtube user 'supercool69' with a fake email address looks at a lot of Girls gone wild bikini videos.

Kimbop, have you no concern for your personal privacy, or do you just welcome Big Brother into your life?

I recommend everyone use an anonymizer.

The OP also points up the question, "Why does Youtube even save all that data anyway?"

Personal privacy? What would I do online that would be worthy of concealing? (aside from teach some privates in korea)

Big Brother doesn't care about little Kimbop and the cigarettes he mails to northern Manitoba. Big Brother cares about Qayyum Jamal.

I don't look at child porn. I don't plot terrorism. I don't slander or libel others. I don't sit in movie theaters with video cameras.

But I do pay bills online with my credit card, which is insured.

Youtube and google save their data to catch perverts like christopher Neil, who uses an anonimyzer.

If I had to guess why Youtube saves the info, it's probably more or less for marketing purposes.

Please tell me what an anonymizer is?

I use Youtube, but mostly for user created videos not copyrighted stuff.

There are other sites that host streaming videos. I suppose they are going to start going after those sites sooner or later. The problem is as soon as they shut one down, another one will pop up. And another....

Google:

Your name, your age, your image, your health problems, your psychological problems, your criminal interest, where you live, where you have been, where you are interested in going, your opinions on most matters, your job, your friends, what your friends do etc etc etc etc etc.

You get all that information from googling your name? I don't believe you. I searched my name and a few acquaintances on dogpile, webcrawler, search.com, and quicklaw, and only quicklaw returned results of a criminal acquaintance. Let me try googling your name, and we'll see if you're telling the truth. (Unless your name is Miley Cyrus; she has quite a few bios online)

Heck, even on facebook, a plethora of private information, most people should have enough common sense to tighten up their privacy settings.

There's so much shit out there that can give nefarious ones access to your info. Keyloggers, email spyware programs, and on and on and on. Turn your firewall up and keep your antispyware program up to date. That'll help some.

I use Firefox with the Tor application when doing any serious blogging, albeit this is no guarantee of anonymity. Total anonymity is but an illusion. If you're doing something online you aren't supposed to be doing, somebody in a high place will find you out sooner or later.

Tor will keep the small-time lamers at bay (for now), however.
