Quote:
LONDON (Reuters) - A student who scribbled an expletive on an English language exam paper was awarded 7.5 percent for accurate spelling and effective communication, The Times newspaper reported on Monday.

The pupil, who wrote "f--- off" after being asked in an English exam to "describe the room you are sitting in", got 2 marks out of 27 and would have got more if he had added some punctuation, chief examiner Peter Buckroyd told The Times.

"It does show some very basic skills we are looking for -- like conveying some meaning and some spelling," said Buckroyd, who works for the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance examinations board. "It shows some nominal skills but no relevance to the task".

"If it had had an exclamation mark it would have got a little bit more because it would have been showing a little bit of skill".

According to The Times, to gain minimum marks in English GSCE papers -- an exam taken by hundreds of thousands of 16-year-olds across England every year -- pupils must demonstrate "some simple sequencing of ideas" and an ability to put "some words in appropriate order".

You get sadder and sadder everyday.

Imagine how empty your life is, if you can remember meaningless threads like that.

You are one sad lonely individual.

7.5 is still a failing grade I suppose, and anyway the clever student provided a lot work for Daily Mail journalists, who have to put food on the table for their families like anyone else. Not many people can help our ailing economy like that while writing school exams.

You are starting to take a lot of abuse for being pathetic, Spliff. May I suggest that your avatar should purchase a hairpiece? People go a lot on superficial visual impressions.

I think he means because I just wrote elsewhere that some kids - these are super-excited first graders mind you - have said "hello monkey" when I walk in the class.

All that I can say is that I remember an immense amount of information I read on Dave's ESL (and many other places).

If I read a story that entertained me, then it's not possible that I would forget it even months later.

At least Spliff is subtle with his comments. He is "rude" or "harsh" with his overall method, but I think his delivery is simple, non-confrontational, and outright hilarious.

Mrsquirrel, in all seriousness, all he did was post the link that it was from. Sometimes when a mistake is made you have to accept it. Spliff chooses to point it out, yes. But there are others on this board far more hostile than he is (in my opinion.) But for real, Spliff gets his fair share of beat-downs as well, so it all works out in the end. If you don't believe me, check the buy/sell/trade forum. He can't sell anything on there because everyone is out to get him. Smile

I think a large majority of what he posts is very funny. At least it is better than a boring mundane message board.

"Just one man's opinion".
