|
|
I'm in Hong Kong, not Korea, so forgive my naivet. I have noted a few uni jobs in Korea which advertise twenty weeks of holidays per year. Hey, gimme that job! The couple I've seen are lower end of the pay scale - under 2 million. But hey, with 20 weeks of hols, I could be running my own internet business on the side!
It seems too good to be true. So, is it? Or do they throw in 15 weeks of summer camp?
Such a job would be ideal for me. My wife lives in Beijing, and I would still be able to pop over and spend a lot of time with her. I could also get the time to finish a few "projects" I am working on - not ESL related. |

Yes, I really do have at least 20 weeks vacation, although when you throw in the fact that the first week of each term is limited to 20-30 minutes of introduction per class, and the second and/or third weeks are fairly free due to MTs, it really ends up being more. Add in the the 2 weeks or so of Korean holidays and you start seeing that uni jobs really CAN be as good as people say they are.
Just steer clear of the unigwons and unis with poor conditions, and you can be living a pretty quality life here in Korea. Keep in mind that often you will work a couple weeks of "camp" during a vacation period, but the pay for these is often pretty darn good, and can finance a great vacation while you're still getting paid during the other large chunk of vacation time. |

Thanks J7. Hmm, it's definitely worth a shot then. I earn a heap of cash here in HK, but it's expensive as hell, and the worst part is I never see my wife. I'm happy to take a big pay cut (but she's not, being female and all). We've spent about 3 weeks together this last year. My plan is to head back to Australia eventually, but I don't want to go back till I secure a full-time job, preferably in a uni. I got my PhD a year ago, and have done plenty of publications, but haven't secured anything worth taking in the west. I want to spend a year researching and writing a book. That's pretty hard with the working life in HK, which involves long hours. BTW, uni jobs here in HK are really hard to come by, and the working conditions oppressive, so that's not a preferred option. |

With a PhD and experience working at a university you should be able to get a job in the 2.7 to 3.0 range with 20 weeks vacation. I would say that anything under 2.5 isn't worth taking for you.
Just my opnion. Maybe others on here can give you more info.
Good luck OP. |

My base is 2.5. I have a BA.
I'd hope someone with a Ph.D. would make a lot more. Many public school teachers are making that. |

Well, I've ben looking at heaps of uni ads on Dave's. Haven't seen anything much more than 2.0, and most under that. So are you suggesting that the salaries for unis are negotiable? Because from what I am seeing, you are stating a salary considerably above the asking rate. |

More like: the better universities often post only on their websites..and not on Daves. There are a few good ones on here, but mostly the dregs. Wikipedia has a good list of all Korean Uni's. Cheers |

I work 2 semesters of 17 weeks each.
So that's 52 weeks-34= 18 weeks vacation for me. |

I work 16 weeks a semester and get the full 20 weeks off a year. No camps or any other obligations. |
