So next time you question a Korean teacher, you could get whacked!!!

Teacher Beats Student Over US Beef

By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter

Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is investigating allegations that a high school teacher hitting a student for a comment regarding the candlelit protests against American beef imports.

According to the office, the teacher at a vocational high school in Seoul identified only by the name Lee, became furious when a student disagreed his idea that people do not have to oppose American beef imports. Lee reportedly said, ``There are 12,000 people dying of traffic accidents a year and the risk of dying from mad cow disease is far less than that. We should care more about the economic benefits we could get from the imports.''

When the student, identified as Jeong, refuted, asking, ``how could you compare the two in the same line?'' Lee ordered him to kneel down, before striking his thigh twice with a rod.

After that, Lee ordered the student to never attend his international trade class again and to transfer to another school. Moreover, one of Jeong's friends said that Lee told other classmates to take pictures of the punishment.

The office spokesman said Lee was a sincere teacher, a member of the progressive Korean Teachers and Education Workers' Union, and had never caused trouble of any kind before.

The school headmaster has already issued a disciplinary warning to the teacher for wrongly punishing the student in front of other students, according to the education office.

One of his classmates captured the scene of on his cell phone and posted the video clip on the Internet.

The teachers' union plans to strip the teacher of his membership.

Let's try to show a little more insight than this...really.
It seems like the article doesn't justify either of it's titles(here, or in the times).

I'm not justifying violence in the class, just noting that it's at least possible that the student was punished for disrespect (read HOW he made his opinion) rather than for his opinion. I realize that simply stating a different opinion in an ultra-conservative environment could be misconstrued as being disrespectful, and that such a situation would not be justifiable, but in this case we don't have enough information to say for certain.

So, the moral of the story is:

Hitting kids is a-ok (as it happens thousands of times every day in classrooms all around the country), but if you're hitting him for a politically unpopular reason, you are going to get in trouble. Good ole Korea.

Probably this teacher has been upset at recent violence and pathetic protests that people are doing, and lashed out this way. Some people have no control over their emotion, especially Koreans who are notoriously emotional.

This is clearly a case of "taking one for the team." This guy set himself up to be the poster child of the "student-beating mad cow lover."

Now, think about what kind of article it would be if it was an American teacher who hit the Korean students. All hell breaking loose, it would be.

He did not beat the student....

In military terms, it is called Wall-to-wall Counselling

Basically, he is preparing the student for the rigors of military duty..... Wink
