Do E-1's need to get permission from their university to take a camp job (not affiliated with their university) during their vacation time?
This will be my first time on an E-1, so I don't really know how the visas are different, except for the initial documentation requirements being different. |

Yes, you need to apply to immigration for an additional workplace to be added to your ARC. This will also require the permission of your employer. |

How is the initial documentation different?
I apologize for going off topic, but I did a search and came up with nothing. |

I was under the impression E1s were not allowed by law to do camps at all. |

You may be right, but I was more under the impression that universities were unlikely to give permission. |

It's okay. E-1's don't require a criminal background check or a medical check. |

I was asking for future planning purposes, so I won't actually be trying for quite some time. |

E1's are not conversational instructors, they are "content" teachers.
Camp (C-4) visas are "conversational," so E-1's can't have them.
Don't you dare try to teach conversation, nasty little content teacher.
I was given a C-4 on my E-1 in 2005 when I did a winter camp with my boss's permission at XXX University (although they lied to Immi. about the number of days I worked for them) but I hear they are hard (impossible?) to get these days.
Ridiculous? Check. Self-contradictory? Check. Inconsistently applied? Check. Easily corrupted? Check.
Must be Korea. |

Yeah, but an E-1 could teach a camp if he files for change of workplace with kimmi, with his uni's permission. |

I've heard differently. I applied for a camp at a university outside Seoul (Daegu? I can't recall.) last year and was rejected BECAUSE I had an E-1 and they had, supposedly, had trouble getting temporary visas added to E-1's in the past. It's not a change of workplace, it's permission for a secondary workplace and E-1's can't get permission to do an E-2's job (teaching conversation) even if their employer gives permission. The "final" word, of course, lies with the Immi. officer you talk to on whichever day you go to Immi. If you don't like their opinion, get back in line and get a different answer from someone else. Ah, Korea! |

For an E-2, getting permission to work at a camp is a "change/addition of working place" under Immigration regulations.
Pyongshin Sanja is correct in that teaching at a camp, as E-2 (conversation) work, falls outside the scope of an E-1 visa.
Theoretically it would be possible for an E-1 to apply to teach at a camp, but he would have to apply for "Permission for participation in activities uncertified for current sojourn status." Based on the immigration guide page for that application (http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/InfoDetailR_en.pt?categoryId=2&parentId=393&catSeq=436&showMenuId=376&visaId=E1), E-1s can only be granted permission for E-3 and D-6 activities.
But, you can always apply. All they can do is say no. Remember though, it's not just an additional workplace. |
