Has everyone heard about the counter protest this Sat. at Seoul plaza??
Finally, those in this country with some common sense are making their voice heard. There will be pro-import demonstrations AND it is focusing on issues that this country is blind to such as the North Korean human rights.
If they put as much energy behind the N.K. problem as they do on bulgogi the divide would have crumbled years ago.
I think we should all show up.

ARTICLE: Expat, Korean coalition plans counter-demonstration in Seoul
The Seoul Plaza, which has played host to the two-month-long candlelight vigils against U.S. beef imports, is expected to see another group of protesters fighting back this weekend.
Separately from the counter-demonstrations held by conservative civic groups, a band of expats plans to stage a rally on Saturday in protest of the on-going vigils.
The counter-demonstration plan is led by a 30,000-member internet community (http://cafe. naver.com/nonodemo) and LiNK, a non-governmental organization devoted to human rights protection of the North Korean people.
"About a thousand people, including 100 Korean American university students, up to 700 students, professors and English teachers from abroad, migrant workers and defectors from North Korea are likely to take part in the counter demonstration on Saturday," said a member of the "No-No Demo" internet community. "About 300 members of the association of soldiers who defected from North Korea said they would come to protect us."
Hwang Jang-yup, former secretary of the North Korean Worker's Party who defected to the South in 1997, has sent a message against the candlelight vigils, according to the group.
"Hwang's message stated that both North and South Koreas were ruled by dictatorship - one by Kim Jong-il and the other by the mass," the official said.
The counter-demonstration, themed "Why not hold your candles for human rights in North Korea," intends to emphasize the safety of U.S. beef and will feature a funeral procession of the dying people in North Korea. |

I'm gonna go ahead and mention that foreigners are prohibited from "political actions" in Korea. Whether or not its enforced, weigh the benefits of the protest vs. what you have to lose in Korea (including your nice skin complexion if the opposing group decides to treat you like a riot cop).
Korea's "no political action" policy is retarded and I admire the message of the foreign protesters. It sucks that it even comes to this type of action in order to be heard. |

I'll be there 1) because I've been following the atrocities of the human rights issues in NK for a few years and 2) I took pictures of the big June 10th rally and would like to take photos for the counter protest, as well. We'll see how this goes... |

I've read this a lot on other websites, many are going, but I doubt won't be in the protest, just drinking or taking pics on the sidelines. |

I may end up participating, but I don't know. Even though I'd say I'm pretty damn knowledgeable about North Korean issues, I still feel like I haven't done enough to help...so I'd kind of feel like a hypocrite chanting and raising signs. |

Thank Jeebus someone Korean made the ironic connection between starvation of Koreans and a protest about beef.
Didn't take long either. |

I might have to work tomorrow, but if not then maybe I'll go and check it out. Could be interesting.
Can we now post images here? If so, I'd post any pics I take. |

Does anyone know the motivation or justification of Korea banning "political participation" from visa holders?
Definitely not characteristic of an open society. |

E-2 visa holders are banned.

Go to 시청 subway stop (it's on line #2 and...the purple line?) and get out at whatever exit says "City Hall." You can't really miss it--it's a big circular patch of grass in front of a big official building. It begins at 6 pm. |
