So I'm going to teach soon and was just wondering the following:
(I think I'll be located in Seoul, if not, then some place wherever GEPIK wants to put me)..lets just assume Seoul, or close to it, for these questions...
1) What is the possibility of joining Gyms to lift weights? I lift a lot in the US and want to make sure I can continue in Korea. How much does it cost? Do people speak English?
2) Women...gotta love em' . Just wondering what its like...dating with Koreans and/or other foreigners...anything you got, just tell me...oh and how do they look? (sorry girls if I sound rash, but I'm just curious)
3) Any clubs I could join? Sports, photography, etc?
4) Any places to develop film? I hope to shoot 35mm and want to know if there are places to develop.
5) Are there places where expats/foreigners hang out? If I'm in Seoul, I assume it would be relatively easy to find others to talk to and make friends with. What about in an area located wherever GEPIK might put me? Will I be able to make friends is the ultimate question? And is there a decent amount of foreigners around that you run into them all over..or are they rather rare? |

There are gyms aplenty, although finding a good one can be difficult. For example, squat racks are rare.

I suggest you do a Google search with "Dave's ESL Cafe" and "Korean girls" to find relevent threads. There are lots of threads. The short of it: yes, you can date Korean women, and many of them are hot. Really hot!

There are.
Maybe others can help with your other questions. Feel free to PM me if you want more specifics. |

5) Seoul, yes plenty. Inside Gyeonggi (GEPIK) it can be hit and miss. The bigger GEPIK cities, Suwon, Bundang, Ilsan etc have foriegner bars, places where foreigners hang out and generally in the busier parts of town you see them pretty regularly. In the more rural parts of Gyeonggi foreigners can be almost non-existant - The "small" town I work in has exactly 2 foreigners (yes, this is including non-westerners), myself and the High school FT. However, I don't live there, I choose to commute |

in case you weren't aware, gepik is for gyeonggi-do, the province surrounding seoul. you could be really close or quite far from seoul, but not in seoul. |

first of all, a LOT, an AWFUL lot depends on where you will actually be. as already noted, note that GEPIK is NOT SEOUL, rather it is the "suburban province" around Seoul. You can be close... you can be far.... you can be in a bigger city, or a smaller one.
1) gyms shouldn't be an issue, quality in terms of equipment MIGHT be, but you should be able to find at least something decent. I found a decent gym close to my house, fairly well equipped for pretty much anything I want to do and for decent price. 50K won monthly... 120k for 3 months and they gave me a couple of extra weeks..
2) women.. as noted. lots of threads on this. Outside of Seoul you will find it increasingly problematic and the language barrier higher and higher, as Seoul residents tend to speak much better English.
how do they LOOK? never seen a Korean girl? google it. They will be generally be pretty, (but not "sexy", rather more "cutesy") generally very graceful in their manner, smile and bearing..but cam also be very princessy, quite shallow, physically speaking their legs are often their best asset, but the butt tends to be the worst and anything around the pectoral muscle is hit/miss with it generally being a miss (this all depends on your personal tastes of course)
what they probably won't be... is overweight, frumpy and grumpy which is what you should be used to from the women back "home".
the other questions I can't add to anything already posted.
p.s. btw.. "social life" and nightlife outside of Seoul won't be anything like you're used to back home. It will be some kind of alternate universe, where strangers don't talk to teach other (you're considered strange or having a problem if you eat alone in Korea, or approach/greet someone you don't know) and their "bars" consist of closed of wooden areas completely seperated from everythying/everyone else where you and your friends can be in complete isolation. |

Hey hey
So yeah thanks for hte answers to my questions. I am very sorry, but I was searching around the forum and did find a lot of the answers. Won't happen again...BUT this leads to other questions
how are the foreign chicks seems a lot of foreigners get married and stuff.
..Yeah I've never really seen Korean girls around. My loss...though not when I arrive in Korea , and I understand that a lot is based on my location. I am banking on it being Seoul. Will know by next week I think. |

I don't mean to sound like a horny teenager, but I absolutely love Korean girl's butts.
OP: If you want to see the pinnicle of Korean women (in my opinion, anyway), check out Lee Hyori: http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=_59TKatYTXs
*cough* Now I'm going to go back to being a mature, sober contributor to this board. |

You're planning to move to a place you've never been before, to (likely) do a job you've never done before, and these are the questions you have?!
Let me guess - former high school football star, who still likes to sit around with the guys from the team and talk about those great plays - not far out of college, where you had limited success with the ladies - bit north of fighting weight because of all the rad frat parties you went to - have been known to hole up in your apartment to watch a bit of porn...
How did I do? |

Well you seem like one of those grumpy types...but regardless, you are way...way off. I had many other questions, yet they were answered from reading the forum...So now I'm conjuring up what I can out of pure interest. If you would like to continue with an attitude be my guest...you'll just continue to look like an arse |

Nah, just hackin' on you - Korea, well, especially Seoul, is very westernized in terms of finding the amenities you may need from home. As for meeting up and finding places to party, also easy to do. You seem an extroverted, personable chap, so you should have no worries. |
