|

I always wondered why there were no Korean supermodels out there. Many (though definitely not ALL) K women fit the supermodel mold: skinny, curve-less, vacant-looking, lack of personality/psychotic and violent personality, willing to do severe damage to their bodies to lose 5 pounds, self-destructive, extremely vain, desperate for attention.
But today walking to work I finally figured out their downfall. Koreans (not just the women) are incapable of walking in a straight line. Like how Zoolander couldn't turn left. They'd be falling off the catwalks all over Paris and Milan. I actually saw a woman do a figure 8 today. Another walked right into a post and just bounced off. Rather unfortunate, really.
This isn't an anti-Korean post. I really feel bad for them. No wonder they're always running. I'd be late, too, if I had to cover every single inch of a sidewalk instead of just going straight. |

Back in the 80's (I think it was 1984?) Oprah had a show where a 12-year old beautiful African American girl came on because she said she wanted to change her nose to the shape of a white woman's nose. When pressed as to why, she had no answer.
Oprah started to run down the fashion industry and the Barbie industry (rightly so) and the girl ended up bawling on the show due to whatever - a realization of her own confusion perhaps.
I think it wasn't until after that show that beautiful non-Caucasian women started to become showcase models. I remember that the only samples of beautiful black women (just to continue the sample) before that point were in B.B. (black beauty) salons with the mono-thematic super-fro. Also fashions for plus-sized women didn't really come out until after that time.
I don't generally like Oprah but I do credit her for having raised this question.
Maybe Korea's problem is they've got no Oprah asking the same question.
That single phenomenon may give more fuel to the 우리 nationalism in Korean glamour than anything else - just latecomers on the under-representation correction.
Proof to the contrary welcome. |

Um, Koreans already have an Oprah. The original one. It's on all the time, and they eat it up.
Had to check a speech a little girl did for some competition last month. It was all about how she wanted to be like Oprah. |

No, I mean an Oprah that is actually talking to Koreans and including Korean issues.
I watch the original Oprah too. But I don't think she's going to have a Korean girl on her show revealing some social problem the solution to which Oprah'll stand up and champion after.
I know Oprah got in some poop a year or so back for running down the Korean plastic surgery (LOL I said 'running down' but I meant 'identifying it') but there's a difference between talking smack and putting your arm around the youth and saying 'what the hell's wrong with us?'

There's been an advert on all the time recently with the female Korean celeb loud ajumma with a raspy voice - forget her name - sitting in a fake pose with Oprah because she is starting her own copycat show. Haven't noticed the show being on though. |

Just being in a magazine doesn't make one a supermodel. Supermodels are models with the amount of fame and fashion industry "power" that everyone knows who the hell they are: Cindy Crawford, Kathy Ireland, these days Heidi Klum and others.
Who are the ones you listed? No ones over heard of them.
Korea has models, but no SUPERmodels. (although I suppose someone would argue that Lee Sung-hi is) |

ok maybe not SUPERmodels but they are on the rise in the fashion world (that is, if you read Vogue and Bazaar monthly).
there are no Asian supermodels either, besides perhaps Devon Aoki, who is one of the best-known Asian model. |

By the christ - who cares? I have never had a stiffy or even a half of one looking at a 'supermodel'
Compare that to some of the women sitting in my office and who are go around their business in this school. Last thing the Koreans need is a representative to get sucked in to the bullshit industry that is fashion!
A result of what happens when gay men design womens clothes - it is like asking Bill Gates to design a weight lifting machine. |

Wow, so you don't think Adriana Lima or any of the other famous Victoria's Secret models attractive? Many of them are banking millions a year and most definitely fit the credientials of being a "super"model. Not all supermodels are beanpole thin heroine addicts. |
