Hi folks, been trying to register on here for a long time now, reading all the threads, wanting to throw my 2c in.

I'm James, work at Incheon airport, live in Gangeo-gu (Seoul), have been to Korea for short (2-4 week) trips 6 times and finally consented to a long stint.

I guess I could've just put this stuff in my profile- regardless, it's good to see a place where people have balanced views about Korea, that Korea Herald message board was driving me mad.

Are you REALLY the swissjames that used to post at the Herald?

If so (or even if not) welcome to the forum!

Were you being sarcastic, or do you truly believe the views expressed here are balanced?

Wasn't being sarcastic- individuals might say some daft things but most of the time there seems to be a pretty wide range of opinions, and people mostly argue things logically rather than getting emotional and resorting to "Oh yeah?? Well Canada SUCKS!!!>>??" (which seems to be the normal standard on the net)

Welcome James, good to have you aboard!

Just wanna give you a heads up if you don't know Austin. He's not a serious poster, even though he posts in a style that makes you think he's serious, but actually he's a troll who just wants to annoy people.

What he does is include lots of subliminal criticisms and judgements of the OP in his message, he hides them with using things like "if you were not teachingwell , it may be a good idea to blah blah blah ..." and then you go back to the OP and see that there was nothing in the OP to suggest that the poster was not teaching well.

Austen has a superiority complex and a monstrous chip on his shoulder. Just wanted you to bear this in mind when you read him. Luckily he's not posting much at the moment.

I think it would be fairly accurate to say that he's not very well liked around here.

Hi! Feel like I'm on a bit of tightrope round here before I get to know the lay of the land. Cheers for the info, I'll bear it in mind but don't want to take sides!

If I was to hypothetically say I'm not an ESL teacher would I get booted off the board? It took me long enough to register so I don't want to mess up

I don't you HAVE to be an ESL teacher to be on this board, though it might help a bit. I guess as long as you're interested in Korea, may want to teach, or have friends who teach and don't troll Smile ...whatever, you'll be OK.

OK I should be cool then- I'm a software engineer working at Incheon Airport, doing support stuff, so if you're waiting for a flight and all the TV screens black out, I'm the guy that gets shouted at.

Most of my friends here in Korea are ESL teachers though, and I think I'm on pretty much the same wavelength.

Plus, I never troll.

Welcome to the board! No need to be an English teacher... there are a few regulars here that aren't. Of the five forums we have... only one is directly related to teaching Very Happy (Job Discussion Forum).

Any q's, any probs, don't hesitate to call upon one of your *friendly* mods Very Happy

thanks for the welcome folks- don't go to the Korea Herald message board. It's like this one, but for the hard-of-thinking.

Can I borrow that phrase "the hard-of-thinking"?
