I noticed someone said they got cash in lieu of their round trip airfare home and back when they signed on for another year.

I'm thinking of asking for that, in other words, asking the school supervisor to give me cash instead of the cost of the airfare.

I was wondering if others have done that, particularly public school FTs? Are there any written rules allowing this? Any advice?

It's not done yet, but is being considered in Gangwon POE. Talk to your POE head coordinator. I asked mine when I met him on my 1st day about this and he said he is working on this as lots of teachers have been asking about this. I will check up again throughout my year on the status of this, but nothing is guaranteed as it's not in the contract though it could easily be done based on what an economy class flight directly home would cost. I only want the amount of a direct flight home applied to the itinerary of my choice such as a RTW trip.

Last year in a hagwon, I was able to negotiate a ticket to LA with a stop over in Bangkok by paying the director the difference of that ticket and what it would had cost to go directly home. It was only $130 difference so it cost me only $130 plus a $120 domestic flight from California to Missouri to take a 2 1/2 month long trip to SE Asia. Not too shabby.

see if they'll let you book the tkt yourself thru your own travel agent

then talk to the travel agent and offer about 40,000 won (not that I would know, having never done this myself, only heard, mind you ok?!!) Shocked

tell him you just want the paperwork so you can claim the fare amount from your school

he will give that to you, you provide it to your school and they wire the money to your bank acc

all is well. Cool

It's in the new GEPIK contracts... on renewal....
airfare home or
airfare to somewhere cheaper or
cash.

Article 9 sub 6 reads:

6. In the event Employee does not travel to either his/her home country or another country other than home pursuant to the foregoing 3, Employee will be given the amount of money equivalent to the round-trip airfare within 2 weeks upon renewal of Contract. Vacation is used in the manner pursuant to the foregoing 3.

What about getting your visa renewed? Don't you have to go outside the country for a new E2? Isn't that why some offer expense paid trips to Japan upon a contract renewal?

Not sure it still works, but if you book a flight through the airline directly, you can get nearly all of it refunded. I did it once, in order to get out of a contract, returned the ticket to Asiana, and only lost about 10,000W

You do NOT need to leave the country for a renewal / extension.

Just a matter of filling in some paperwork, paying the 30k won fee and Bob's yer Uncle... out you go with your extended ARC in hand - good for another year.

IF you CHANGE your visa (as in change employers) you MAY have to do a visa run.
