When I took my gf to the UK her Korean cellphone worked fine there whilst roaming. I guess this is because of the USIM thing. I guess it also means that Korean phones can now work with GSM networks as well as Korean CDMA, right?
My cellphone has a slot for a SIM card but I don't have one in it. Could I buy a SIM card and stick it in, in Thailand? Or would that totally not work..
Another backup plan is I could use my old UK phone. Except I brought it with me when I first came to Korea almost five years ago. I suspect the battery has leaked or died or something by now though eh.. |

I met and seen many European tourists in Thailand using their European cell phones there by buying a prepaid minutes chip for their phones. They unlock their phones by putting in a code they get off the internet. |

If your girlfriend's phone worked in the UK, that means it's a 3G phone (perhaps with GSM step-down capability).
If your phone has an empty slot, that means it's not actually a SIM slot. That's a slot for a banking or traffic card IC. If your phone was 3G, it would have a USIM in that slot. So your phone is most likely a CDMA phone, and hence will not work in most other countries. |
